The paper is devoted to determinants of readership and reading in a society. Referring to the results of 2008 research on readership and reading in Poland which imply deep regression of the latter, the author attempts to find reasons of that situation. She questions a popular belief that the development of readership and reading is mostly dependent on technological modernization of libraries and points to the necessity of adjusting library collections to real needs of their users. She also emphasizes the necessity of providing physical access to libraries in small towns and villages. Finally, she shows fundamental relationships between readers’ activity and education – the latter including school, preschool and informal channels – stressing their significance in shaping readers’ habits.

Przedmiotem artykułu są uwarunkowania wpływające na rozwój czytelnictwa w społeczeństwie. Odnosząc się do wyników ogólnopolskiego badania czytelnictwa w Polsce z 2008 r. wskazujących na głęboki jego regres, autorka poszukuje przyczyn tego stanu rzeczy. Kwestionuje popularne przekonanie, iż podstawą podnoszenia poziomu czytelnictwa jest przede wszystkim techniczna modernizacja bibliotek. Wskazuje potrzebę dostosowania kolekcji bibliotecznych do rzeczywistych potrzeb czytelników. Zwraca uwagę na konieczność zapewniania fizycznej dostępności bibliotek w środowiskach wiejskich i małych miast. Pokazuje fundamentalne zależności między aktywnością czytelniczą a edukacją, zarówno szkolną, jak i nieformalną oraz przedszkolną, podkreślając jej zasadnicze znaczenie dla kształtowania nawyków czytelniczych.

General reading retains both a close and distant social environment, which influences quantitative and qualitative dimensions. From 1989 in Poland readers gained accesses to new kinds of writing and authors. This choice ultimately changed reader interests, which had previously focused on a canon literature that had been fixed the school curriculum. However, family traditions and school set texts are not the only indicators of reading practices. New, and little-recognized reader groups, often of an elite character, have a diversified the traditional reading community, often-times supported by cyberspace.
