The success of cultural diplomacy of such countries like France or United States show us that culture can present an unusually effective but often underestimated instrument of the foreign policy. The purpose of this article is to present how significant role culture can play in the foreign policy and how remarkable opportunities can gives. In the first part of this article the author explains such notions like “cultural diplomacy” and “cultural foreign policy” treating them as individual areas of the external activity of a state. In the second part of the article the author indicates features of the cultural factor in international relations that decide about specificity, methods and instruments of cultural diplomacy. Father the author tries to single out the object and the subject of the cultural foreign policy and describes the methods, instruments and institutions which are used by modern states promoting their culture abroad. In the summary the author emphases that taking advantages of culture in the foreign policy gives a great deal of possibilities and o lot of profits in the world area. Cultural diplomacy serves two basic roles: 1. Enables promotion and presentation of national culture outside. 2. Can be a forceful instrument to realize political and economic aims and interests of a modern states. The author also underlines that culture is a very rewarding instrument in interpersonal relations, therefore it can turn out to be helpful when the classical methods and instruments of diplomacy fail.
