Instytucja audytu krajobrazowego, wprowadzona do ustawy o planowaniu i zagospodarowaniu przestrzennym przez „ustawę krajobrazową”, ma być środkiem wsparcia narzędzi ochrony krajobrazu. Nowość i wartość audytu krajobrazowego przejawia się przede wszystkim w tym, że podejmuje się on analizy krajobrazów na poziomie odpowiednim do ich typów, skali i charakteru, podkreśla rangę tego zagadnienia w pracach planistycznych, jak i tworzy ramy dla jednolitego podejścia do opisu i zarządzania krajobrazem. Jest on jednak w głównej mierze instrumentem diagnostycznym, służącym uzyskaniu wiedzy o szczególnie cennych walorach krajobrazowych i instrumentem prewencyjnym.

Landscape audit scheme, has been introduced to the Act on land-use planning and development by the "landscape act". It is aimed to be a supporting tool for the solutions of landscape protection. The value of the landscape audit manifests itself primarily in the fact that it undertakes to analyse landscapes at a level appropriate to their type, scale and nature, highlights the importance of this issue in the work of planning, as well as it creates a framework for a unified approach to the landscape description and landscape management. However, it is largely a diagnostic instrument, for attaining a knowledge of particularly valuable qualities of the landscape and preventive instrument, preventing the devastation of the landscape.
