In December 2011 the French Linguistic Association (Association des Sciences du Langage, www. assoc‑asl. net/) organized a conference at the René Descartes — Paris 5 University entitled Linguistics in Europe. One of the panels was devoted to European contrastive linguistics. The following text offers an outline of some of the data presented in the introductory paper on this topic. The first part contains a remark on the concept contrastive. The second part presents certain contrastive approaches in French and Czech linguistics.
The paper deals with the regulation of personal names in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Based on data consisting of legal documents and on-line discussions, it focuses on two areas: (1) the historical development of the regulation and (2) its implementation. Employing the social force field model, the paper argues that despite partially independent development, the legal norms of both countries establish analogous social force fields. However, these fields may function in differing ways, as the norm authorities employ different types of codices.
The presented paper responds to the recent debates on the possibilities of change of the Constitution of the Czech Republic and provides theoretical background for the question in which circumstances are constitutions changed in general, whether it is a partial change or new constitutional document is accepted. The aim of the paper is to provide readers with an insight into the issue and to open up some problematic questions among which the issue of the legitimacy of the changes made to the constitutions is crucial. Since the people are now generally perceived as the bearer of the sovereignty in terms of the dichotomy of the constituent power and constituted power, the people should be able to participate in the process of the change of state’s basic law. Such participation may be realized in a variety of ways. The paper deals with some cases where such possibility was given to the people. It focuses on the case of the Constitution of the Czech Republic which was adopted under specific historical circumstances. It is precisely the question of legitimacy that is attacked as insufficiently accented in the process of adopting this constitution. This paper therefore presents concepts that are able to overcome this deficiency which in 1992 was evident. At the same time, it deals with the question of how the future constitution should be adopted in the light of the issue of legitimacy.

The starting point for the present work is the conviction that we can study the memory of undemocratic pasts from both a transnational and comparative perspective. Television series offer viewers an account of the passage of official history, through the prism of both the fictional characters and viewers’ personal (emotional) relationships. In light of this, some elements are going to be investigated common to two television products, the first set during the Francoism (Cuéntame cómo pasó) and the second during Socialism (Vyprávěj), whose patent purpose is to depict how everyday life was under these repressive regimes. From a transnational point of view, the two TV series demonstrate the presence of at least one common narrative mode of undemocratic pasts, which goes beyond specific national features and characteristics. The specific elements mentioned in this work (the narrator as re-affirmation of the guide-values, the family as a synecdoche for the community that remembers, the television as the ‘memory medium’, and the emotional recognition between audience and character as the mediation space with a ‘problematic’ past) can be interpreted as a possible first mapping of the different narrative modes that tend to be connected with the representation of undemocratic pasts in Europe.
This study is focused on finding a possible relation between deception and emotional intelligence among respondents in the Czech Republic. Emotional intelligence is related to self-deception and detection of lying, yet there is not enough information on its possible relation to lying behavior itself. A deception behavior survey and the TEIQue inventory were used to analyse deception characteristics and emotional intelligence among 112 respondents. ANOVA and regression analysis revealed significant differences in lying behavior, which might be influenced by the global trait of emotional intelligence or well-being. Results suggest that respondents with lower emotional intelligence use less lies and tend to lie to adults more often than to children. These results might be beneficial for interventions in pedagogical or forensic psychology or in family therapy and can improve our understanding of variables affecting lying behavior.

The article attempts to present the role of the Slovak and Czech political elites in the process of disintegration of the Czechoslovak Federation in 1993. The main thesis of the article is that a lack of the common federal opposition elite before 1989 was the main reason why the Czechs and Slovaks went separate ways. Czechoslovakia is a unique example of the state founded on a decision of the political elite in 1918 and it was also by their decision that the “velvet divorce” tookplace. In addition, it is worth underlining that the disintegration of Czechoslovakia came against the opinion of the majority of society. Political winners decided after 1989 that it would be better to become leaders of smaller but independent states than to try to find consensus and work together.
In contemporary (not only) Czech society, the share of childless persons is increasing. Research in the field of social sciences focuses mainly on explanation of female childlessness than male one. This text tries to at least partially fill the gap in research when focusing on male childlessness from the perspective of masculinity, resp. hegemonic masculinity. Thematic analysis of repeated problem-oriented interviews with 12 heterosexual men (of different age and education) focuses on explanation of the life experience of these men with childlessness, respectively their perception of childlessness in relation to the conditions and circumstances of their lives according to the construction of their masculinity along the main axes, i.e. "values and norms", "perception and meaning of close relationships", "meaning of work and leisure activities", "experiencing the individual's life situation". The combination of these basic axes leads to the re-production or disruption of hegemonic masculinity characteristics. The analysis has shown that even in the case of childlessness, men more often construct their masculinity in terms of its hegemonic mode than crossing it. However, the construction of hegemonic masculinity also occurs through "unspoken", "concealed", i.e. what is not directly articulated in interviews, so attention should also be paid to this issue in research on masculinities.
The article is based on a presentation delivered at the conference The Prague Spring 50 Years After: Great Crises of Communist Régimes in Central Europe in a Transnational Perspective, which took place in Prague in June 2018. The authoress examines commemorations of the Prague Spring in 1968, monitoring the filling of the public space of the Czech Republic by memorials, statues, memorial plaques and other artefacts reminiscent of events in 1968 and 1969. She deals with their initiation, dedications, symbolical contents, and social reflections. The ninety of so memorial places created between 1989 and 2019 to commemorate events and personalities of the Prague Spring represent a significant segment of the gradually built memory of Communism. It is the second most frequently remembered period in the internal chronology connected with the Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, which in terms of the number of commemorative artefacts is surpassed only by the 1950s. The authoress presents a basic list of topics which the memorial places are reminiscent of (Prague Spring personalities, victims of the military intervention in August 1968 and the suppression of riots in August 1969, self-immolation of Jan Palach and other “live torches”, restoration of memorials of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and planting of “Trees of the Republic”), comparing some of them with similar commemorations in the Slovak Republic. She also pays attention to manifestations of anti-Russian sentiments and the politicization of the past, which accompany commemorative activities related to the Soviet intervention as the central topic of the Prague Spring memory.

Článek vychází z příspěvku předneseného na konferenci „Pražské jaro 50 let poté: Velké krize komunistických režimů ve střední Evropě v transnacionální perspektivě“ (The Prague Spring 50 Years After: Great Crises of Communist Régimes in Central Europe in a Transnational Perspective), která se konala v Praze v červnu 2018.
Objectives. Recent research has begun to pay attention to the experiences of guilt and shame in different realms of human life. However, there is an urgent need to develop valid instruments for measuring these emotional experiences. The main aims of this study are to introduce a newly developed tool, the Guilt and Shame Experience Scale (GSES), and to psychometrically evaluate its properties. Sample and settings. An online sample of Czech respondents aged 15 and over (N=1101; 34.4 ± 13.0 years; 26.9% men) participated in the survey. Experiences of guilt and shame (GSES), together with basic socio-economic information, were measured. Results. The non-parametric comparison of different socio-demographic groups showed a higher disposition for experiencing guilt among women and religious respondents and a lower disposition for experiencing both vindication and shame among middle-aged respondents. For the purpose of factor analysis, the data set was divided into two groups. One group (N=551) was used for Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and the second (N=550) for Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). On the basis of the EFA performed on a matrix of polychoric correlations and the subsequent CFA, two items were excluded. The eight-item version of the scale has good internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha 0.86 and McDonald’s ωt 0.88. At the same time, the polychoric correlations between the items of the scale showed a low to moderate inter-item correlation, with values between 0.20 and 0.60. A two-factor model has the best fit with the data. The two-factor solution also corresponds to the theoretical assumptions and to the two expected subscales of the questionnaire: shame and guilt. Each subset contains four items. Study limitations. The main limitation of this study is that it did not reach a representative sample, allowing a more detailed exploration among socio-demographic groups, and therefore, it was not possible to determine the norms for the population.

Metoda. Výsledky neparametrických porovnání mezi různými sociodemografickými skupinami ukázaly vyšší míru dispozičního prožívání pocitů viny u žen a věřících respondentů a nižší dispoziční prožívání zahanbení i viny u respondentů středního věku.
Objectives. This study attempts to introduce the Driving Locus of Control (DLoC), a method focused on the internal or external source of at-tribution of the driving behaviour, to the Czech context. This study also relates DLoC to atti-tudes towards autonomous vehicles (AVs).Participants and setting.Out of the general population, 59 inquirers personally interviewed (CAPI) 1 065 respondents (49% women) in the age range between 15 and 92 years (M = 50, SD = 17). The respondents were sampled via multi-stage random sampling procedure, based on the list of addresses in the Czech Republic.Hypotheses.The authors hypothesised to rep-licate the original two-factor structure of the DLOC Scale and that the higher levels of inter-nal DLoC result in not considering the improve-ment in traffic safety as the AVs replace human drivers.Statistical analysis.Confirmatory factor analy-sis was used to analyse the factor structure of DLoC Scale. Hypotheses related to the empiri-cal validity of the method were assessed via structural equation modelling. Reliability of DLoC Scale was calculated in terms of internal consistency (McDonald coefficient).Results.Confirmatory factor analysis revealed reasonably good support for structural valid-ity of the one-dimensional DLoC-CZ15 factor model (χ2 = 426.967, df = 90, CFI = 0.964, TLI = 0.958, SRMR = 0.066, RMSEA = 0.065). In addition, the one-dimensional DLoC-CZ15 factor model showed acceptable internal con-sistency - ω = 0.9 (95% CI [0.89, 0.91]). The structural equation modelling found a relation-ship between DLoC and some of the items cap-turing attitudes towards AVs, too.Study limitations. The analysed data were ob-tained via interviews between respondents and inquirers. As a result, the study does not contain indicators of empirical validity measured by a methodologically different approach, such as an observation of driving behaviour.

The paper is based on interviews with Czech Muslim community leaders and focuses on the way they interpret the concept of jihad, how they think the concept should be implemented in action, and what factors shape their interpretations. It reveals two parallel understandings of the concept: a wider interpretation (i.e., the struggle to promote something good) and a narrow one (armed struggle). Three different typologies of jihad have been identified. With regard to the narrow definition of the concept, there is a consensus that jihad is legitimate in self-defence. Conversely, there is a tendency to reject the offensive jihad, but there is little consensus regarding the many conditions under which jihad can be declared and waged, especially as to the authority that can declare jihad or if it exists. The interpretative plurality is shaped by five factors, which relate to different authorities, ethical principles and audiences, different interpretations of Islamic history and contemporary political realities.

The study presents the results of a screening focused on the psychological impact associated with the outbreak and further development of COVID-19 pandemic in the Czech population during March – May 2020. The aim of the study was to investigate temporal dynamics of psychological impact covering the first wave of the epidemic, i.e., first phases of the epidemic growth, culmination, decrease, and slow return to a normal lifestyle. The sample of 2716 respondents aged between 18 and 89 years participated in an online survey from March 18th to May 25th, 2020; part of them (typically seniors and others, who had not access to the internet) were assisted in entering the data by trained interviewers. The survey comprised questionnaires capturing emotional states, psychological disturbance, anxiety, and depression. The changes in the scores by pandemic phase (time frame) were studied for the whole sample and for gender and age groups. The results show that the threat of COVID-19 caused a significant increase in negative emotional experience and in the symptoms of psychological disturbance, anxiety, and depression in the Czech population in time of infection culmination, even when the spread of the pandemic was well controlled, and then a gradual decline over time. The data indicated that the pandemic situation had a more pronounced impact on women and younger adults. The study also showed that in situations of pandemic stress associated with isolation, when isolated people are interviewed about their mental state, their reports on negative experiencing might be significantly reduced compared to direct anonymous selfreports data entry.

The bearers of Czech tramping, which arose more than a century ago and has undergone an extremely remarkable development, have always been primarily young men, to a lesser extent female. Their active hiking had lower and upper boundaries. While the lower limit was relatively strictly determined by reaching the age of majority, that is to say,the age of fifteen, the upper limit (that is, thepartial or definitive end of tramping activity and affiliation with the tramp community) was rather relative. The study focuses on covering the range of these cut-off points of active tramping, which were mostly identical to major life milestones (entry into basic military service, starting a professional career, entry into marriage, parenthood, or even death).
The essay deals with the transformation of society and culture in totalitarianism with the example of the Czech folklore revival movement between 1948 and 1989. The text reflects the results of research that used the method of oral history in combination with the study of official and unofficial written and pictorial sources. While describing the principal objectives of the Communist cultural policy, the essay observes the reasons for the mass development of folk ensembles in the 1950s and the gradual transformations of their activity’s philosophy. The degree of cooperation between folk ensembles and political power, and their exploitation for the propagation of Communist regime was varied. Politically engaged performances as well as participation in the events organized by the totalitarian state apparatus – all that has resulted in the negative attitude that a part of the Czech public has adopted towards the folklore revival movement as a whole. Yet it is currently obvious that most members of folk ensembles were not politically motivated, and for many of them this leisure activity was an escape from reality to the romantically viewed world of folk culture and its ethos.

The beginning of this comparative study introduces the comparison of the Czech Law of Service Relationship with corresponding legislation of the countries, that have been undergoing a very similar development (firstly, the regulation of the German Democratic Republic, and after its dissolution the regulation of the Federal Republic of Germany). Having dealt with a theoretical background of Comparative Law, the first part of the paper deals with the terminology, that is being used for this comparison, since both legal orders, containing legal institutes that are being compared, differ linguistically from one another. Thanks to the method of functionality of comparative law, there is a comparable phenomenon of dogmatically defined “intervention administration” identified, on whose basis there are two institutes in respective legal orders (namely security forces and armed bodies), that are to fulfill similar tasks in either country. In the second part of the paper, there is an introduction to the constitutional fundaments of the service relationship in both legal orders, that are being compared. A comprehensive comparison follows, dealing with the means of foundation and termination of a particular service relationship. Then, the claims emerging in case of such termination are presented. The relation of these claims to the social allowance is being examined and a working hypothesis of the legitimacy and effectiveness of the respective approaches is being verified.

Nasila się poczucie zagrożenia (teza o „niszczeniu inteligencji”: M. Kundera, B. Skarga, M. Janion, P. Czapliński), pojawia się literatura nostalgiczna (A. Stasiuk, I. Dousková, P. Brycz), powstają sztuki teatralne, eksploatujące poczucie zagrożenia, dezintegracji, demonstrujące rozczarowanie nową rzeczywistością (L. Balák, D. Drábek, J. Topol).

XX
This essay is devoted to reflection (on Czech and Polish literary and drama examples) on the moment of transition, when the totalitarian regime gives way to the democratic tendencies. The expansion of popular literature, many cultural offerings coupled with the development of the Internet (with all the consequences of this mental phenomenon), cause among others, a reduction of the importance of literature and frustration of the creators, who fought the previous regime. Retiring totalitarianism – and its essence is the politicization of all forms of social existence – leaves a kind of ‘void’; this in turn results in paradoxical sense of longing for the past and leads former dissidents to perceive the new reality as hostile. There is a growing sense of a danger (the thesis of „the destruction of intelligence”: M. Kundera, B. Skarga, M. Janion, P. Czapliński), a nostalgic literature appears (A. Stasiuk, I. Dousková, P. Brycz) as well as the new theatre plays, exploiting the sense of disintegration, demonstrating the disappointment of current times (L. Balák, D. Drábek, J. Topol).

I pay attention mainly to the narrative representation of certain aspects of the meaning of compulsory military service, namely the conscripts' preparedness for the defence of their country and actual deployment in combat. This is done through an analysis and interpretation of oral history interviews. On a practical level, I explore reflections of military exercises, the relation of contemporary witnesses to weapons and their potential use, evaluation of combat vehicles and effectiveness of combat alerts. In a theoretical perspective, the article is based on the cultural model of military history with an emphasis on confronting the discourse based on experience with the official model of compulsory military service, taking into account collectively shared ideas about the army. In general, what predominates in the recollections of actors is a rather negative image of the army as a more or less useless "total institution", which, up until the 1990s - undoubtedly mainly as a result of the August 1968 occupation - de facto had no social prestige. Due to an ambivalent experience with the duality of the disciplinary order, many contemporaries gradually concluded that the essence of "real" military service was not military training (the official order), but the individual way of coping with violent repression and with the violation of human dignity by more "senior" soldiers against "junior" ones.

Z teoretického hlediska text vychází z kulturálního modelu vojenských dějin, s důrazem na konfrontaci zkušenostního diskurzu s oficiálním modelem povinné vojenské služby a s přihlédnutím ke kolektivně sdíleným představám společnosti o armádě.
Theoretically grounded in memory studies, this article reconstructs how the official Soviet-Russian myth of the Great Patriotic War has been politically instrumentalized and abused to promote and legitimize the Kremlin’s power intentions. It examines the forms, mechanisms and actors of this systematically applied politics of history and memory. First in the context of the Soviet intervention in Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and the justification of the subsequent Soviet Army’s stay in the country, then in the context of the propaganda activities of pro-Russian activists in the Czech Republic and the current Russian aggression against Ukraine. By the myth of the Great Patriotic War, the author understands the purposefully created, maintained and idealized image of the victorious campaign of the Red Army between 1941 and 1945, the selfless and unprecedented Soviet heroism that saved European nations from German fascism. This sacralized narrative, which suppresses other historical narratives, is monopolized in contemporary Russian state policy as an important tool to shape the historical memory of Russian society and to unite it against new and presumably hostile threats. The author demonstrates the strategy in which during the normalization of the 1970s and 1980s the soldiers of the Soviet Army, who allegedly provided “fraternal assistance” in the suppression of the counter-revolution in Czechoslovakia in August 1968, were presented as the successors and “sons” of the heroic liberators of 1945 and shows how they themselves used and participated in this cult in their “comradeship” with Czech society. After the collapse of the communist regime, this official narrative lost its weight, but the “Russian world” (russkii mir) as a conglomerate of ideas linking segments of Russian culture, Orthodoxy, nationalism and shared historical memory has penetrated the Czech Republic, serving as a “marketing brand” to spread Russia’s geopolitical influence during Putin’s rule. Through the Russian-language press, web platforms and social media, the author maps the actors and forms of the “Russian world” in the Czech Republic, whose background consists of part of the local Russian minority and local pro-Russian associations or initiatives. She pays particular attention to the nationalist motorcycle club Night Wolves (Nochnye volki) and the originally civic, but gradually becoming a state movement Immortal Regiment (Bessmertnyi polk), which revive and promote the myth of the Great Patriotic War in line with the Kremlin’s intentions and which establish their branches beyond the borders of Russia, including the Czech Republic.

Podoby, mechanismy a aktéry této systematicky uplatňované politiky dějin a paměti konkrétně zkoumá nejprve v kontextu sovětské intervence do Československa v srpnu 1968 a ospravedlnění následného pobytu Sovětské armády v zemi, poté zejména v souvislostech propagandistického působení proruských aktivistů v České republice a současné ruské agrese proti Ukrajině. Autorka prostřednictvím ruskojazyčného tisku, webových platforem a sociálních médií mapuje aktéry a formy působení „ruského světa“ v Česku, jehož zázemí tvoří část zdejší ruské krajanské menšiny a místní proruské spolky či iniciativy. Zvláštní pozornost přitom věnuje nacionalistickému motorkářskému spolku Noční vlci (Nočnyje volki) a původně občanskému, postupně však postátňovanému hnutí Nesmrtelný pluk (Bessmertnyj polk), které intenzivně oživují a propagují mýtus Velké vlastenecké války v intencích politiky Kremlu a zakládají své odnože za hranicemi Ruska včetně České republiky.
