Piotr Pirecki’s book is a collection of 8 articles which refer to the creativity of Piotr Ciekliński, Łukasz Opaliński and anonymous rouges from the turn of the 16th and 17th c. Its fairly eclectic form might be acceptable were it not for the numerous drawbacks which are observable already at the orthographic-punctuation level. The style of the papers is also no better, as it often hampers (and even makes it impossible) to grasp the author's intention. Most serious objections, though, pertain not to the form but to the content. Apart from simply commonplace statements we find either clearly naïve interpretations or unjustified overinterpretations. All that makes that oftentimes interesting ideas (referring either to the presence in rouge poetry such motifs as stimulants, anxiety of black humour) are presented in the way which leaves much to be desired. In sum, Pirecki's book is a mere collection of sketches but not scholarly analyses.

The article specifies the role of rationalism in the work of a distinguished Baroque author, Łukasz Opaliński. The source material for the study consists of: Rozmowa Plebana z Ziemianinem (1641), Polonia defensa contra Ioan[nem] Barclaium (1648), Coś nowego (1652), Pauli Naeoceli de officiis libri tres (1659), Poeta nowy (1661–1662). Łukasz Opaliński stated that reason is the most important cognitive faculty of the human being. Reason makes it possible to understand the rules of natural law, which is the source of ethical action among humans, and brings on understanding of the eschatological aim of human life, that is salvation. The possibilities of rational explanation do not, however, encompass the mysteries of religious faith or the basic concepts of natural philosophy, such as the elements, which are the principal components of matter. Rationalism belongs to the principal ideas of Opaliński’s political philosophy. He opted for a rational organization of the state and for rational ways of solving social problems (he underscored the role of common sense, rational dialogue of citizens and rational responsibility for the common good). The political formation that is best suited for rationalization of social life is monarchy. Seeing it as a model government, the author realised that it could not be introduced in the Poland of the 17th century, and consequently, apart from the eulogy of the monarchy, he proposed improvements in gentry democracy, especially in limiting of the “golden freedom”. An important sphere of externalization of Opaliński’s rationalist ideals was his theoretical thought on literature. He critically evaluated some examples of Baroque art of conceit. He underscored the role of rational sources of creativity and rational discipline in structuring a literary work, and his postulates in this field were close to the concepts of classicist criticism.

The purpose of this article is to show the impact of Niccolò Machiavelli’s idea on Łukasz Opaliński’s “A Parish Priest’s Conversation With a Landowner”. The author of article noticed that for both of these political writers, virtue, good laws and customs were very important. First of all, however, the article presented examples of references by the Polish poet and writer of the baroque to such works as “The Prince” and “Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius”. The author also pointed out what influence this reception of Niccolò Machiavelli’s writings.

By the analysis of the particular political dialogue Rozmowa Plebana z Ziemianinem written by Łukasz Opaliński in the 17th century, this study aims to interpret the early modern concept of Polish identity within the framework of ancient tradition of a good commonwealth. Moreover, paying particular attention to the values of liberty, equality and legality, one is allowed to assume that the aforementioned Polish tradition resembles the attributes of European republicanism that were typical of distinctive Western European political thought of that time. Applying the methods of discourse analysis, it is possible to identify important and specific changes concerning Opaliński´s concept of a dialogue in comparison with an older Polish tradition of the same genre. Hence, one can claim that Opaliński´s fictional figures does not represent a typical clash between desirable and undesirable political ideas, but are supposed to reflect symbolic internal and indispensable ambivalence within the concept of Polish identity regarding specific interpretation of liberty, political equality and common good.
