Editorial activity of the Publishing House “Dehon” for twenty years of its existence has been deep-rooted in charisma and mission of fr. Dehon, the founder of the Congregation of Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Fr. Dehon was the author of many social and spiritual books and articles. It is worth mentioning especially his social works because of their originality, inventiveness, and, at the same time, their full faithfulness to the social doctrine of the Church as taught by the pope Leo XIII. Three books by fr Dehon are particularly notable: “Le Règne du Cœur de Jésus dans les âmes et dans les sociétés,” „Manuel Social Chrétien,” and „Catéchisme social”. Apart from works mentioned above we have a lot of writing by fr. Dehon that still wait for their critical analysis and publication. It is an important task, because the writings of the founder remain for the member of the Congregation an exhaustible source of knowledge about life and activity of fr. Dehon. The Publishing House “Dehon” has already begun the translation and publication of some works of fr Dehon. There have been also many social and spiritual publications that draw on the same spirit. We hope and we wish that it is also continued in future.

The presentation of the theme The life, the media and the sacrum in the messages of the pope Benedict XVI is based on the pontifical messages for the World Communications Day. In the first part it is shown how the human life is understood as linked to multiple, as Benedict XVI defined, contexts. Then it is presented the relationship of mutual helping each other between two selected contexts of life which are sacrum and communication. The last part presents, according to the Pope, the media as a favorable environment for the human spiritual life.

On 1985, for the 19th World Communications Day, the pope John Paul II promulgated the message Social Communications for a Christian Promotion of Youth. This pontifical document echoed the initiative of the United Nations, which has proclaimed 1985 year as the International Year of Youth. But, and perhaps it is more important, not only chronologically this document coincides with such papal initiatives for young people like the origins of the World Youth Days. As for the technological development and the growing importance of the media since 1985 it accomplished very much. We are then faced with a promising prospect which creates specific conditions for the reading of the thoughts of John Paul II when it comes to the media as part of modern civilization in conjunction with the potential proper to Christianity and the mission of support for young people.
The attitude of the Catholic Church towards both film and television has changed over time – from a negative to a positive one. With time, the initial fascination with film on the part of Pope Leo XIII transformed into aversion and hostility: film drew people away from the Church and suppressed religious elements in their minds. A breakthrough came with Pope Pius XII, who did not change the Catholic teachings on the media substantively, but modified the tone of these teachings as well as the perspective on the media. The first television broadcast, after World War II, took place in France in 1948. Afterwards, the Church proposed its own solutions regarding preparation of media messages, formation of creators and education of the media audience. This article is a synthesis of premises within the scope of application, role and use of television and film in the Church’s mission. To this end, it contains an analysis of key Church documents dedicated to the media, published after the Second Vatican Council, as well as papal addresses published on World Communication Days.

The primary source of the article "The Christian way of presence on the 'digital continent' in the messages of Benedict XVI" are speeches at the World Day of Social Communications. During his pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI delivered eight such messages. In the first messages he shared his reflections on the media, and recently alluded directly to the issue of the "digital continent". Analysis of these speeches showed that the pope - despite his age - understood perfectly the Network and its users - the "digital natives" (digital natives), and his thoughts and reflections on the Web are now a valuable voice in the discussion on the Church's presence in digital space. The article consists of three parts. In the first, the Internet is briefly characterized, and named by Pope Benedict XVI the "digital continent". The Internet is the modern Areopagus and the agora, where the roads cross between believers in God and those who reject His existence. By analogy to the Athenian Agora and the Areopagus, which was for the apostles - especially St. Paul - a place to preach the Gospel, the contemporary virtual Areopagus demands the pastoral involvement of priests and the courageous faith witness of Catholics. These issues are described in the second and third parts of the article.

Pawła, miejscem głoszenia Ewangelii, współczesny areopag wirtualny domaga się duszpasterskiego zaangażowania kapłanów i odważnego świadectwa wiary świeckich katolików – zagadnienia te zostały opisane w drugiej i trzeciej części artykułu.

By the will of Jesus Christ, the evangelization is the mission of the Church. It is the basis for designation the general tasks, which are: 1) the promotion of human dignity and 2) the proclamation of the truth and exposing the evil. Connecting a sociological understanding the instruments of social communication as a power, with a theological reasons of the exercise of power in the Church, which has to be the service, the specific tasks of the media can be formulated as a different types of service: 1) to the people and cultures; 2) in dialogue with the world; 3) to the human community and the social progress; 4) to the Church community and 5) to the new evangelization.
The article takes the problem up concerning the adoption of the doctrine of the Second Vatican Council about instruments of social communication in polish synodal legislation until 1983. Research showed that polish synodal legislation until 1983 paid attention to: the right of the Church to possess and use of the instruments of social communication, to from a proper media reception, the need for the involvement of the pastors of the Church and the lay Christian faithful in establishing and supporting Catholic media, receivers’ protection against negative impact of the instruments of social communication, the need for using media in deepening missionary issue, necessity of supporting and developing of Catholic press, participate in forming and disseminating of proper public opinion, natural right to information and freedom in disseminating of it, rules of taking photographs and filming during performing liturgical actions, dominance of moral principles in media opinion and responsibility of the pastors of the Church for the development of the instruments of social communication.
The article concerns the Pope Paul VI’s vision of the relationship between Christianity and the mass media. As a basis was adopted announced in 1967 the papal message for the I World Social Communications Day. Chronologically we are here at the threshold of the period of unparalleled mass media’s growth. The reflections and indications of Paul VI coincide with the assessment of this development, the contemporary status quo and the expectations related to the relationship between Christianity and the mass media. The article presents in general the Paul VI’s messages on the World Day of Social Communications. Then the attention is drown to the message for the I World Social Communications Day, ie. to the understanding of the human situation and the world as in dynamism of change, to the world of social media in perspective of the related responsibility and commitments and to the importance of Christian spirituality in such conditions.

The article takes the problem up concerning the adoption of norms of the Code of Canon Law of 1983 concerning the competences of the pastors of the Church for instruments of social communication in directory Apostolorum Successores. In the first part, on the basis of the Code of John Paul II, there were presented following duties and rights of the pastors of the Church: teaching the Christian faithful about the duty to cooperate in using the media, watching over the faith and morals, preparing the norms concerning transfer Christian doctrine by the instruments of social communication and the application of administrative or penal sanctions. In the second part there was indicated that Congregation for Bishops includes in directory 17 norms on the pastoral office of bishops in the field of the instruments of social communication. In 6 of them i.e. 30, 100a, 139, 140, 141 and 142 the adoption of norms of the Code is visible. The authors of the document were founded on can.: 772 § 2, 747 § 1, 822 § 1, 823, 824-827, 830, 831 § 2.

The article presents in-depth analysis of certain questions regarding the appropriate participation in the Holy Mass, based on canonical tradition and current legislation, which contain the documents of the Holy See, the popes, the various dicasteries and commissions of the Apostolic See, as well as the opinions of the experts in canon law and moral theology. The first chapter describes some attitudes that, according to canonical tradition, can influence the non-fulfilment of the precept of listening to the Mass (cf. can. 1248 CIC/17). It also describes the circumstances that, although they make it difficult to listen to the Mass, do not prevent the satisfaction of the obligation. In this part the role of intellect, awareness and will in relation to the fulfilment of the festive precept was explained and the definitions of physical, moral and spiritual presence were given. Furthermore, the problem of the possibility of fulfilling the obligation by means of social communication has been addressed. The second chapter analyses the current legislation, beginning with the Second Vatican Council, which replaced the expression “is present”, which had been used up to that time, with the expression “participate”, which intends to underline the full and active participation in the Mass. However, in the 1983 Code of Canon Law the expression “to participate” was accepted in can. 1247, this expression does not require a totally full and active participation, because being present itself, consciously and voluntarily is sufficient to fulfil the festive precept. Nevertheless, the Church strongly recommends that participation which is called more perfect (perfectior participatio), that is, the Mass connected with Holy Communion.

1247. Pojęcie to nie wymaga jednak uczestnictwa całkowicie pełnego, bowiem wystarczy już sama świadoma i dobrowolna obecność na Mszy św., aby wypełnić obowiązek niedzielny. Kościół bardzo zaleca wiernym doskonalsze (perfectior participatio) uczestnictwo, czyli przyjmowanie Komunii św. podczas celebracji eucharystycznych.
