According to a common belief, women’s participation in the political life during the Middle Ages was miserable. However, the most ambitious individuals managed to gain prestigious positions in the state and to influence those who were in power. A considerable number of remarkable women appeared as early as the very beginning of Czech history. Even the founding of the state of Bohemia is to some extent attributed to the legendary Lubossa. Also, at the beginning of the 10th century, two women played important roles in the historical events. When Duke Vratislaus died in 921, his mother Ludmila and his wife Drahomira became seriously conflicted with each other. The ambitious women fought for regency on behalf of juvenile Vaclav. They could not agree on how to educate or bring the boy up. Political and religious differences between the two were also of substantial importance and the end turned out to be tragic – Drahomira had her mother-in-law strangled and it was her who eventually got the upper hand. The situation implies that in the struggle for power women can be as ruthless as men and the death of the duchess was the first act of the fight for the throne that took place at the beginning of the 10th century.

The text presents the early cult of St. Ludmila and the author’s disagreement with the opinion that the cult did not exist until the mid-12th century. The author opposes the view that not only was it not officially recognised but sometimes even opposed by the Prague bishops.

The paper deals with the calendar from Gertruda’s Codex and consists of two parts. In the first, the author discusses earlier proposals concerning the time and place of the calendar’s creation and its patterns, and in the second, a thesis is presented on the influence of Gertruda herself or her circle on the form of the calendar, especially the selection of the remembrances of saints it includes.

The main source used in the article is a Latin manuscript from the former library of St Peter and Paul’s Church in Legnica, currently kept at the Wrocław University Library. The components of the manuscript were created in the 1370s and 1390s in Bohemia. In the course of processing the document, various interesting bohemica were discovered, ie Czech translations of Psalms 129 and 132, identified as a part of the Clementine Psalter from around the mid-14th century, in ‘Mammotrectus’ by John Marchesinus, 13 Czech month names on the margins of ‘De regimine mensium’ as well as botanical names, medical terms and advice on lactation inducers among other medical prescriptions. There is also a contentual bohemicum, ie initial fragments of ‘Passio sanctae Ludmillae’, the Latin account of the martyrdom of the Bohemian patroness saint, from a breviary written at the turn of the 12th and the 13th centuries. The article includes comments on the aforementioned texts as well as their editions.
