In every culture, people have always used symbols giving them sense and assigning them a specific meaning. Over the centuries, with the passage of time religious symbols have mingled with secular symbols. The charisms of Judaism have mutually intermingled with the Christian ones taking on a new tribal or national form with influences of their own culture. The aim of this article is to analyze and determine the influence of Judaic symbols on religious and social life of the Jews. The article indicates the sources of symbols from biblical times to the present day. I analyzed the symbols derived from Jewish culture, and those borrowed within the framework of acculturation with other communities as well. By showing examples of the interpenetration of cultures, the text is an attempt to present a wide range of meanings symbols: from the utilitarian, through religious, to national ones. It also describes their impact on the religious sphere, the influence on nurturing and preserving the national-ethnic traditions, sense of identity and state consciousness. The political value of a symbol as one of the elements of the genesis of the creation of the state of Israel is also discussed.
The article focuses on the imitations of Polish literary texts. The authors were Masurian writers from East Prussia in the nineteenth century. The local press discussed the question of boundaries between creative processing of someone else’s work and plagiarism. The Masurians praphrased texts that were close to them in regard to customs and religion. The tale Lichy Zysk (Poor Profit) by Martin Gerss was written in this way. The text is a transformation of a short story by Józef Chociszewski Kto wygrał zakład? (Who won the bet?). Both works perpetuate the stereotype of a ‘’Jew” as an individual who is sloppy and extremely greedy for profit. Gerss’ text compared to the original is more concise. The Masurian tale contains elements of the local reality.
Maria Konopnicka’s novella Mendel Gdański was written in response to a request from the author’s friend Eliza Orzeszkowa. The work was a contribution to a publicity campaign in the part of Poland occupied by Russia at that time, conducted in order to make Polish society aware of the dangers of adopting cultural attitudes that were alien to it. Such attitudes were propagated by the tsarist bureaucracy, which, in the interests of the Russian empire, incited anti-Semitism in order to divide Polish society. The article emphasizes the need for a contextual reading of the novella. It shows how important it is to know the historical reality in which the work was written and its genesis. The author gives a characteristic of the perpetrators of the riots described by M. Konopnicka and the neighbors of the Jewish family, concluding that it is necessary to reinterpret the novella’s message, which is not so much a protest against anti-Semitism as a protest against instilling hostility towards others into Poles.

Carska biurokracja, podżegająca do antysemickich wystąpień, podejmowała te działania w interesie imperium po to, by rozbijać i dzielić społeczeństwo polskie.
The aim of the article is to analyze the terms referring to Jews in statements of supporters of two football clubs from Łódź - Widzew and ŁKS. The exemplification material was obtained from online forums. A characteristic feature of Łódź supporters is that the use of the Jew’s label is two-sided. Expressionism The Jew, in the language of fans always being an expression of depreciation and insults, in the statements of internet fans of both clubs from Łódź not only got pejorative derivatives, but also numerous synonymous and metaphorical terms that are intended to ridicule the opponent.

Celem artykułu jest przypomnienie nowatorskich koncepcji Józefa Obrębskiego opublikowanych w roku 1936, a dotyczących teorii grupy etnicznej, dialogicznego charakteru poczucia tożsamości narodowej i struktury opozycji swój / obcy.

The article deals with unique ideas of Józef Obrębski, published in 1936 and relating to the theory of an ethnic group, a dialogic nature of national identity and the structure of the US / THEM opposition. The shaping of one’s image of a group is possible only through contact and dialogue with other groups, for only contact allows one to identify differences and develop the feeling of one’s own ethnic identity (self-stereotype). According to Obrębski, the US / THEM category has a mental and not an ethnographic nature; therefore, it is humanistic and imagistic. The image of one’s own group is a negative of that of others; it is composed not of all features but only of socially distinctive ones. The US / THEM opposition is also contextual, dependent on historical conditions, language, rituals, cultural patterns. A claim is made that Obręski, who referred to the work of Florian Znaniecki and Jan S. Bystroń, was also inspired by structural linguistics, specifically the conception of distinctiveness and the phonological theory of opposition, which distinguished a phoneme from a phone or the functional and mental aspect from the physical aspect. The article also presents the means in which Obrębski portrayed the US / THEM opposition in relation to: (a) Polish Russian relations in Polesia, where national contrasts are augmented by deep social differences of the type “master peasant” and additional characterological connotations; (b) the image of a Jew as a stranger to the Polesia community but at the same time a mediator between ethnic groups in the region; (c) the social and ritual foreignness of women, who from the point of view of the mentality of patriarchal families were an “internally foreign” element.
The author tries to explain the riddle presented in the novel by the modern writer David Markish, The White Circle, about the ethnic identity of the character Matvey Katz, whose prototype is the avantgarde artist Sergey Kalmykov (1891–1967). The name and lifestyle of this artist became the reason for the birth of a personal myth, which formed the basis of the novel semi-detective plot. If in the discourse of the second half of the XX century and in the XXI century (mythology, cinema, a number of literary texts), Sergey Kalmykov, a Russian by origin, appears as a half-mysterious, half-mad person, an Alma-Ata freak, but under his real name, then, in Markish’s novel, he is a Russian artist of “Jewish origin”, living in the fictitious Central Asian topos named Kzylgrad. To explain the ethnic travesty that runs counter to historical reality, to “decipher” the location of the novel associated with the last years of the artist’s life are the tasks solved by the author of the article.

Since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 everything related to the Diaspora (“Golah”) such as culture, language, or mentality was considered despicable and Israelis tried to keep away from it. Dr. Jacob (Kobi) Weitzner a writer, playwright and Yiddish theater director. This article is not about his academic achievements or artistic works, but his seminal activity for the preservation of Jewish culture in the Diaspora.
Tracing the process of immigrants' transition, it appears that in the twentieth century children of Eastern European, mainly Jewish immigrants were trying to get rid of the European past of their parents as quickly as possible in order to take the full advantage of American culture. This attitude brought serious changes in family values, social ties, and religious traditions among immigrants' children, which was vividly presented in Kazin's works. Moving straight toward their American future often meant leaving the Old World heritage and language behind. Many of the immigrant children regarded this type of attitude as another logical step in their development. But although this incorporation into the mainstream of the American culture was fruitful, some of them experienced a deep sense of irreversible loss over their past.
The essential Christological and soteriological message of the Letterof St. Paul to the Romans precedes with the reflection on the biblical ideaof the retributive justice of God. He does not do it to humiliate Jews andGentiles because of the sin in which they lapsed, or to make them aware oftheir equally hopeless situation before God, or even to force them to humiliatethemselves in grief and repentance before God the Judge. He wants toexplain to the addressees of the letter why God intended to justify them alltogether in the same way, without taking into account the primacy of theprivilege of the Jews, nor the permanent godlessness of the Gentiles. Bothwere simply sinners, which caused them to find themselves in the samesituation with respect to the righteousness of God’s judgment and punishment. Therefore, all without exception, as sinners both Jewish and pagan, will attain justification in the same way, namely by faith in Jesus Christ.

The author presents the linguistic-cultural picture of the relationship US / THEM (OWN / FOREIGN) on the basis of the accounts of elderly country inhabitants of the Lublin region. The material was collected between 1995 and 2005. The stereotype of someone from outside (one of THEM), entrenched in the consciousness of the subjects, is captured in several aspects: territorial, national, religious, cultural, psychological, in terms of lifestyle and appearance. The multitude of the criteria makes foreignness gradable. One of THEM is above all a Jew, because of the religion, occupation (trade), behaviour, clothes and appearance. At the same time, however, a Jew is close in the territorial sense, is one of US. A German is also foreign, with memories of WWII as a cruel person who hates Poles, who speaks an unintelligible language but is impressively clean and rich. The least foreign is a Russian or Ukrainian, a “brother-Slav”, sometimes treated even as one of US. The author also claims that the US / THEM contrast also has a purely linguistic nature manifested in the oppositions known / unknown, contemporary / old, and even standard Polish / folk dialectal Polish. Foreign is the thing unknown and distant, what belongs to the past (from the point of view of the younger generation) or to the present (for the older generation). Therefore the category of foreignness is not only gradable but also ambivalently valuated.

On the basis of data from various genres, the author analyzes the range and cultural functions of the images of ethnic foreigners in annual rituals. These include: the Jew, Gypsy, Turk, German, Hungarian, Cossack and a generalized figure called “the foreigner”. Some of them, e.g. the Hungarian or the Turk, only appear in some genres and rituals, whereas the Jew appears in a wide spectrum of genres. The article analyzes in greater detail the following exponents of foreignness: the language, clothes, appearance, gestures, singing and music, knowledge and skills, attributes and religion. The author also stresses that the figures of the foreigners, in contrast to commonplace stereotypes, are also manifestations of intentional and symbolic admissions of the people to the community. The process is multidimensional and is realized through Polonization (mainly in attire), functional equivalence to other figures, a change of semantic valuation (from negative to positive) or a socially grounded treatment of the foreigners as both addressees and participants of rituals.
