Among the many paths in life on which God places man there is undoubtedly the one that leads to the heights of holiness. It is not always easy, but certainly beautiful. Delighted by this beauty of God’s plans, Brother Jerzy Lakomiak united his paths with the Master’s dogs. Reading and responding to God’s call, he responded with his life by taking up the path of the evangelical counsels: chastity poverty and obedience following the example of St. Francis of Assisi. His love for God, the Blessed Mother, holy poverty, quiet and humble service, and a life of prayer, first in his native country and then for half a century on Argentine soil, made it possible that today among his confreres and those who knew Brother George, he is spoken of as one who exemplarily fulfilled the mission the Risen Lord entrusted to him.

The aim of the article is to present the figure of St. Therese of Jesus as a role model of religious life in selected works of post-Trent hagiography. The source material comprises of a biography included in the 1780 edition of Peter Skarga’s lives of saints and a collection of the lives of Carmelite saints by Fr. Philip of the Holy Trinity (1746). Besides the basic biographical content, the texts under discussion include characteristic features of Therese as a role model of a religious, following the Trent Council regulations. The article is published to commemorate the 500th anniversary of St. Therese’s birthday (1515-2015).

Artykuł jest przyczynkiem do badań nad ideą naśladowania Chrystusa, wyrażoną w ikonografii chrześcijańskiej za pomocą obrazowej metafory dźwigania krzyża wespół z Chrystusem. „Kto nie bierze swojego krzyża, a idzie za mną, nie jest mnie godzien” (Mt 10, 38) – z mocą nauczał Chrystus. „Kto chce pójść za mną, niech się zaprze samego siebie, niech weźmie swój krzyż i niech mnie naśladuje” (Mk 8, 34, par. Mt 16, 24). Wierni temu przesłaniu komentatorzy tekstów biblijnych, egzegeci, teologowie i mistycy przez kolejne wieki rozwijali, pogłębiali, komentowali i objaśniali ideę naśladowania Chrystusa, posługując się chętnie także biblijną metaforą „wzięcia krzyża na swoje ramiona”.

The article is a monograph on the idea of following Christ, expressed in Christian iconography through the metaphor of bearing the cross together with Christ. „Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:38) was Christ’s powerful message. „Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34, par. in Matthew 16:24). Abiding by those words, Commentators of Biblical texts, experts on exegesis, theologians and mystics for centuries have developed, elaborated and explicated on the idea of following Christ, readily using the Biblical metaphor of „taking the cross upon one’s arms”.

To sum up, it is possible to notice that John Paul II can see the base of the monastic spirituality in appointing the human to the excellence. He is showing, in accordance with the conciliar learning, that it is a privileged, although not only way of the aspiration of the human to the holiness. Th e Pope is taking hold of the being of the monastic spirituality in the alliance of the love of the consecrated person with the Christ and in the participation in his cachexia. Next amongst means of implementation filling evangelical advice up and loves of the Church are giving to the monastic spirituality. The task is recommending it to fill up through the bearing witness into everyday lives and the apostolate. In this way an excellent certain template forms the sketch and the manner of analysis of the research spirituality of individual monastic institutes their in compliance with the faithfulness for charismata and indications of founders.

Refleksja nad misyjnym wymiarem charyzmatu sercańskiego wpisuje się w bogaty kontekst historii oraz duchowości życia zakonnego. Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku powstała we Francji większość instytutów zakonnych męskich i żeńskich w odpowiedzi na religijne i społeczne potrzeby ówczesnej Europy. Zakładane nowe zgromadzenia zakonne ubogacały Kościół specyficznymi formami czynnego życia apostolskiego, bazując na charyzmacie i misji swoich założycieli, a także bogatej duchowości zakonów mniszych, żebrzących i kleryckich. Osobiste pragnienie połączenia kapłaństwa z życiem zakonnym stało się dla ojca Leona Dehona inspiracją do założenia Zgromadzenia Księży Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego dla dobra Kościoła oraz osobistego uświęcenia jego członków.

The reflection upon the Dehonian mission charism fits into the rich context of the history of religious life. At the turn of the 19th and 20th century most of the religious orders for men and women in France came into being, as the response to the social needs of Europe of that time. Shaping of the new religious orders enriched the Church with the specific forms of apostolic life, based on charisms and missions of their founders, and the rich spirituality of the orders of monks, beggars and clerics. Personal desire to combine both priesthood and religious life became the inspiration for Fr. Leon John Dehon to found the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart for the benefit of the Church and for the personal sanctification of its members.

Śluby zakonne, będąc darem Trójcy Przenajświętszej, stanowią odzwierciedlenie tej formy życia, którą przyjął Syn Boży, posłany przez Ojca w Duchu Świętym. Trynitarne źródło życia zakonnego jest widoczne na różnych poziomach: na poziomie powołania, poziomie instytutów oraz poszczególnych wspólnot. Artykuł porusza również zagadnienie świadectwa osób konsekrowanych oraz wymiaru profetycznego życia zakonnego.

The purpose of this article is to show the Triune God as a source of a consecrated life. The vocation to the consecrated life is being born of free God’s initiative. The religious vows, as the Holy Trinity’s gift, are reflections of that way of life, which God’s Son accepted, who was sent by Father in Holy Spirit. Trinitarian source of consecrated life is seen in various aspects: the aspect of vocation, the aspect of institutes and the aspect of communities. The author of the article also raises the topic of the testimony of consecrated people and prophetic aspect of consecrated life.

In the article the teaching of Mother Teresa Kalkstein on the calling to religious life is presented. The fourth General Superior of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ devoted a lot of attention to the religious vocation, including the theoretical questions and practical suggestions of carrying one’s vocation in everyday life. Despite the passage of time, some of her thoughts have remained relevant. That is why her writings can still be a useful and interesting reading for the consecrated persons.

W artykule przedstawiono nauczanie m. Teresy Kalkstein na temat powołania do życia zakonnego. Czwarta przełożona generalna Zgromadzenia Sióstr Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego wiele miejsca w swoich listach okólnych poświęca problematyce powołania zakonnego, począwszy od kwestii teoretycznych aż po praktyczne wskazówki dotyczące realizowania powołania w codzienności. Pomimo upływu czasu niektóre jej myśli nie tracą na aktualności, dlatego jej pisma wciąż mogą być pożyteczną i ciekawą lekturą dla osób konsekrowanych.

Kryzys życia konsekrowanego łączy się ściśle z kryzysem współczesnego człowieka oraz kryzysem Kościoła. Osłabienie wiary i wierności wybranemu powołaniu skutkuje brakiem świadectwa i w jakiejś mierze wpływa również na spadek liczby powołań. Zarówno słowo Boże, jak też współczesne nauczanie Magisterium Kościoła dają jednak wskazówki, które mogą stać się źródłem odnowy życia zakonnego. To niesie nadzieję, że zakonnicy ponownie staną się wyraźnym znakiem obecności Boga w świecie.

The crisis of the consecrated life is tightly connected with the crisis of the contemporary human being and with the crisis of the Church. Weakening of the faith and lack of faithfulness to the chosen calling results with lack of witnessing and consequently with lower number of vocations. Both the Word of God and the modern teaching of the Magisterium of the Church give clues, which could become the source of the renewal of the consecrated life. It gives hope that the religious again will become a clear sign of the presence of God in the world.
