The article is devoted to the problem of the main character of the contemporary Russian literature. The questions, which are related to the concepts of “a hero of our time”, “the main character of a literary work”, are posed and solved here on the base of the selected literary works written by three prominent representatives of a new literary phenomenon of the beginning of the 21st century, conventionally called “new realism”. These are Roman Senchin, Zakhar Prilepin and Sergey Shargunov. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and present the way of creating a literary hero of the post-Soviet period. The following “new realists’” texts are analysed in the article: two Prilepin’s novels – Sankya (2006) and Black Monkey (2011), The Yeltyshevs (2009) by Senchin and Shargunov’s story entitled Ura! (2002).
