The article is devoted to the consideration of names in terms of language fashion. The purpose of the article is to study the influence of fashion on the formation and development of the family system of the modern Belarusian area. To achieve this goal, the author analyzes the anthroponymic material of the business literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 14th to the 17th centuries, as well as the unpublished metric books of the 18th and 19th centuries. The documents studied were written in Old Belarusian, Latin, Polish and Russian. Based on the analysis of a significant number of sources, the signs of surnames as fashionable objects are determined based on the sociological concept of fashion, the features of the formation and functioning of surnames from the point of view of the language mode are described, fashionable nominative tendencies such as orientation to foreign naming models, the replacement of single-component surnames by double ones components), the use of gemination, repetition at all language levels that can perform a game function. A diachronic study of the evolution of the family system from the point of view of the phenomenon of fashion makes it possible to identify fashionable nominative tendencies dominating in different periods, and also to try to explain the appearance of fashion trends in the modern family name system.
