The study aims to research and explain the income and expenditure of the Bratislava City Chamber in the 15th century especially from the financial point of view. The main source material is 79 selected chamber account books (Kammerbuch) kept in the Archives of the City of Bratislava, Capital of Slovakia. The year of origin of the chamber books also limited the researched period, which begins in 1434 the year of the first surviving book and ends in 1528, two years after the Battle of Mohács. The introduction gives an account of the City Chamber and of the chamber books as source materials, while the two main parts analyse the individual items of income and expenditure recorded in the chamber books.

The paper is a reconstruction of the life of a Hungarian magnate active at the Hungarian court of Sigismund of Luxembourg, Nicholas of Szecseny and Salgo. It is also a sounder into the life at the court of the King of Hungary. As a result of his eccentric and exceptional character Nicholas of Salgo became a victim of the hatred of some of Sigismund’s courtiers. This fact led to a plot, due to which he was condemned and exiled from Hungary. He spent the last years of his life in Venice. The documents in the Venetian archives concerning Nicholas’ possessions, which were not studied up to now, provide substantial additional evidence on his Venetian exile, his eccentric way of life and exceptional education.

The relations with the King of Bohemia George of Poděbrady were a key factor in the foreign policy of Mathias Corvinus from the beginning of his reign. Initially correct and close relations between Mathias and George became later more changeable as a result of the momentary interests of the monarchs. Their relations gradually became more complicated and cooler, finally leading to open conflict in 1468. The diplomatic ties between the kingdoms of Hungary and Bohemia in the period 1465 – 1469 are the subject of the present study. At this time the territory of the Kingdom of Bohemia was at the intersection of the interests of various European powers. Apart from Mathias Corvinus, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, King Kazimír IV of Poland from the Jagiello dynasty, the Pope and various German dukes from the Wittelsbach and Hohenzollern dynasties were involved in Czech affairs. Apart from describing the relations between the Hungarian and Czech monarchs, the paper aims to put their steps into the context of international affairs in this period.

In 1452, Jiskra’s Drienčany Fortress (district of Rimavská Sobota) was under siege and occupation by Ján Hunyady. This event has been attracting the attention of experts and laymen for a long time, since the oldest descriptions mention a very original means of conquering. The medieval chronicles state that the Drienčany Fortress was forced to capitulate because the valley underneath was blocked by an embankment and the defenders were threatened by drowning. Later on, the authors usually took over the chronicle information on faith, sometimes even adding to them. The contribution offers a reflection on the reality of this claim, verifying whether it was really possible to implement such a method of siege. Special consideration is dedicated not only to the factors supporting the chroniclers’ mentions (military mapping, assumed position) but also the circumstances raising doubts (assumed duration of the siege, absence of any visible traces).
