W artykule zaprezentowano statystyczne uzupełnienie badań nad polskimi dziewiętnastowiecznymi czasopismami popularnonaukowymi. Omówiono rozwój ilościowy, wydawców, ośrodki wydawnicze, częstotliwość ukazywania się, żywotność oraz tematyczną zawartość i przeznaczenie czytelnicze. Ustalono, że w latach 1800-1914 ukazywało się 30 tytułów czasopism popularnonaukowych, wydawanych głównie w Warszawie (19), w większości przez drukarzy, księgarzy i właścicieli firm wydawniczych (13). Na tym tle opisano pod względem czasopiśmienniczym dodatek do „Miesięcznika Galicyjskiego Towarzystwa Ochrony Zwierząt” o tytule „Dla Młodszych” (1898-1913). Miesięcznik popularnonaukowy, przeznaczony dla młodzieży ukazywał się we Lwowie przez piętnaście lat i był kierowany do młodych miłośników zwierząt. Redakcja periodyku chciała uwrażliwić młode pokolenie Polaków na los zwierząt dzikich i domowych, a także rozwijać zainteresowanie zoologią i ochroną zwierząt. Ten program realizowała głównie poprzez opowiadania, powiastki i krótkie notki informacyjne. Sporadycznie ukazywały się w piśmie artykuły popularnonaukowe lub fragmenty prac naukowych. Niemniej jednak był to pierwszy polski specjalistyczny periodyk popularyzujący zoologię i ochronę zwierząt skierowany do młodych czytelników. W czasie badań wykorzystano wszelkie dostępne (również najnowsze - biblioteki cyfrowe, bazy danych) źródła dokumentacyjne oraz egzemplarze tytułów czasopism. Wykorzystano metodę historyczno-opisową i metodę analizy zawartości prasy w zakresie ustalenia genezy, stylu, elementów treściowych, miejsca wydawania, form popularyzacji, metodę analizy i krytyki literatury przedmiotu, która pozwoliła na wyselekcjonowanie i weryfikację dotychczasowych ustaleń oraz elementy techniki statystycznej

The article presents the statistical supplement to the studies on Polish 19th century popular science magazines. It describes the quantitative growth, publishers, publishing centres, issuing frequency, liveliness and thematic contents and reapers’ purpose. It has been established that in the years 1800–1914 30 popular science magazines were issued, mainly in Warsaw (19), mostly by printers, librarians and publishing company owners (13). This was a background for a magazinewise description of a supplement to the „Galicia’s Animal Protection Society Monthly” entitled „For the Younger” (1898–1913). The popular science monthly, destined for the youth appeared in Lviv for fifteen years and was addressed to the young animal lovers. The editorial board of the periodical wanted to sensitize the young generation of Poles to the fate of wild and household animals, as well as develop the interest in zoology and animal protection. This programme was realized mainly by stories, tales and short information notes. Sporadically, there were popular science articles or fragments of scientific works appearing there. Nevertheless, it was a first Polish specialist periodical popularising zoology and animal protection, addressed to the young readers. The study used all available (including the newest – digital libraries, databases) documentation sources and issues of the magazine titles. The historic-descriptive method and press content analysis methods were used in order to determine the origins, style, content elements, place of publishing, popularisation forms. The article discusses the origin of the Historia literatury polskiej wystawionej w spisie dzieł drukiem ogłoszonych [History of Polish Literature presented in the list of published works] (Warsaw Vilna, t. 1–2, 1814) because of this year’s bicentennial anniversary of its publication. The study presents the political situation in the capital of the Duchy of Warsaw, which largely influenced the development of Polish literary historiography, and discusses the initiatives undertaken by the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science community aimed to write and publish a handbook of history of Polish literature. The paper names and characterizes the profiles of authors who were commissioned to prepare the handbook in question. The circumstances of compilation of the History of Polish Literature, whose author was finally to be F. Bentkowski, were shown: the book was initially intended as a school handbook but was finally published as a monumental two-volume work. The concepts of several scholars were analyzed concerning the probable date of when Bentkowski started to prepare the synopsis of History of Polish Literature, and the factors and other works that prompted him to begin work on the book in question. The scholarly methodology employed by F. Bentkowski when gathering materials for the future History of Polish Literature (i.e. research in the book collections of six libraries, including five in Warsaw) was presented and the bibliographic materials made available to him by other scholars, upon which he drew while working on the book, were specified. It was emphasized that the History of Polish Literature [Historia literatury polskiej] brought Bentkowski fame, awards, and honors, but despite its favorable reception in Warsaw’s academic community and its great significance for bibliography and Polish literature, it id not have a second edition in the 19th century. It was reissued only once in the 1980 s.
