The broad objective of the hereby presented paper is to define the functions of A. A. Milne’s children’s books’ prefaces and to verify how these functions are transferred into their polish translations. It also deals with translator’s foreword as a nonstandard part of a book adressed to a child reader. The possibility of reading both the original and the translated works through the biographical context is examined by analysing the author’s dedications.
