The past decade has brought unprecedented changes in the functioning of libraries: automation, electronic resources, rising costs of books and journals, consortial purchases etc. Another area of rapid change is user needs. In order to set up user-centered services, libraries need to know their users. This paper gives an overview of the results of various international user studies. The conclusions show that for the great majority of students, computers and networked environment are of vital importance (many of them get familiar with computers at nursery school), no wonder they expect the same speed and relevance from library services. Efficient university library services are also a prerequisite for effective academic research. The article draws the attention to the importance of user studies which should become a general practice at Hungarian libraries as well.

Ephemera as a separate group of library collections are a new phenomenon in Polish academic and research libraries. Ephemera belong to special collections and play a significant role in various areas of scholarly research. Libraries have not agreed upon a detailed definition of ephemera so far. Ephemera most often tend to include various printed items concerning multiple domains of social life and reflecting internal activities of various organizations, associations and institutions. Published in the form of broadsides, leaflets, monographs and serials for temporary informational, propaganda, advertising and standardizing purposes, addressed to clearly defined audience, boasting a varied form and layout, they usually are distributed via channels other than regular bookshops. Some libraries use their own specific criteria for identifying and collecting ephemera. Recently the production of ephemera has witnessed an incredible boom as they became an indispensable part of everyday life. Libraries know this issue in detail due to their growing problems with acquiring, cataloging and storing ephemera. Any decision made as regards ephemera in libraries is bound to be very controversial.

Not only is this article an attempt of reconstruction Darnton’s views concerning books, libraries and researches but also shows its near future. The author is trying to decode a vicious circle which everyone seems to be within – librarians in academic libraries, scientists and publishers. Mentioned trap starts with reviews' high prices – while libraries must pay for delivering permanent magazines, they find themselves not having enough money to spend on monographs. In this situation, when even obliged libraries are not purchasing such releases, editors are not willing to publish them due to minimal expected income. It’s becoming clear that such state can be broken down only by changing philosophy of life – meaning moving scientists to 'open access' publishing. Scientific releases, published by editors associations, emerge thanks to public resources. However they are inaccessible for regular tax-payers. Franckly speaking the clue is that libraries are forced to buy their own people releases. This is becoming frustrating for most of scientists so that's why they decided to share their work in 'open access' manner. If such behavior was promoted and maintained by research institutions it would give an opportunity for development. The most significant achievement here is that science can be made less dependent from economy and industries what obviously brings it closer to its essentiality.

Documents and items of special collections of Polish academic libraries constitute the treasure of our national heritage as well as European and world cultural legacy. The issues such as acquisition profile of University Library Art Collection in Torun, the origin and distinctive character of bookplates collection were presented in the article. The analysis of archival materials of The University Library in Torun allowed to determine provenance of English bookplates collection. The remarkable, outstanding British artist Eric Gill (1882–1940) and his artistic attitude was portrayed. He was the author of the Miriam Rothchild bookplate (1932) which is currently held in Art Collection of University Library in Torun as well as Victoria & Albert Museum in London. A preliminary search of library and museum holdings in Poland, USA and Great Britain showed that only The Art Collection of University Library in Torun and Victoria & Albert Museum in London possess the Miriam Rothschild bookplate of E. Gill in their holdings. The literature research covering E. Gill's oeuvre showed that the bookplate in question is very occasionally presented and it has never been discussed. For that reason the attempt has been made to characterize modes of artistic expression and stylistic onces of the bookplate as well as E. Gill's attitude to nature.
