The subject of this article is the issue of definition, research, and basic theoretical assumptions of the intermedial aesthetics. This discipline does not have any fully defined status yet, due to many debates and discussions which have contributed to the establishment of extensive contexts of this phenomenon. One of them is the aesthetic theory of intermediality, which according to Yvonne Spielmann has a long history dating back to the beginnings of the reflection on intermedia in the essays of Dick Higgins. The author is trying to investigate if the basic assumptions of intermedial aesthetics have finally been formulated after nearly 40 years of discussions about the notion of intermediality. Currently an assumption can be made that the pronounced tendencies have appeared, which allow to include the intermedial aesthetics in the whole complex of phenomena described by Wolfgang Welsch in his project as 'aesthetics behind aesthetics'. Making attempts to classify 'the aesthetics of new media', Krystyna Wilkoszewska emphasizes its pluralistic nature and the establishment of many 'aesthetics of new media'. The same may be said about the intermedial aesthetics which can be compared to the interdisciplinary project including the particular aesthetics of visual media (including painting, drawing, photography, as well as film, video, television, computer animation, the Internet, and Virtual Reality).
