Poland and Japan, there were quite different characteristics in terms of economic system. Since drastic change of economic system in Poland in 1989, increase of economic disparities in terms of unemployment rates across regions was remarkable, probably due to the spatially deviated foreign direct investment. However, in recent years we can also observe a tendency of divergence in regional economic disparities in NUTS 2 level. Turning to Japanese regions, inter-regional income disparities is expanding since 2001 while in 1990s Japanese economies were strongly suffered from the Bubble burst. Japanese central government is now thinking about the reformulation of regional (local) governments, called prefectures. At this point, it is worthwhile to examine dynamics in regional disparities of two countries by comparing quantitatively regional institutional systems as well as economic situations. With regard to convergence/divergence model in the sense of Barro and Sala-i-Martin, there are few studies which incorporate agglomeration effects. We try to explain the dynamics of inter-regional disparities by institutional factors, which are different between two countries, as well as economic factors. The estimation model starts from defining regional production function, and we propose a new estimation model and implement estimation with regional time-series and cross-section data of Poland and Japan. Finally, we would like to refer to some policy implications for desirable regional economic system.

This study presents a classification of Polish voivodships according to selected data on accidents at work. Statistical inference has been applied to decide on the number of subgroups to be distinguished by means of Ward’s method. Critical values of the proposed test were obtained by two-step procedure, with rough critical values determined by computer simulation. They were then smoothed using the analytical function according to the number of objects (n = 16 Polish provinces) and attributes. In fitting the smoothed critical values, a model with a given loss function was applied. On the basis of this procedure two groups of provinces with different characteristics were designed.

The idea of cooperation and industrial clustering is not new. Enough practical experience shows that the idea of clustering is not always understand correctly what can delivers not correct results and effects. Business chains and industrial clusters do not represent a universal tool for solving economic problems of the regional economics. Therefore, it is necessary to provide adequate and effective practical tools what can identify the industrial sectors in which there is a potential of business clusters and chains birth and existence. The various methods analysing the agglomeration and competitive advantages of the industrial sectors can be usefully used. The aim of this paper is to characterize the selected method – Ellison-Glaeser agglomeration index and its use. This method can help to detect agglomerated sectors, respectively geographic concentration that can be used during the industrial clustering process.

In this paper, the author tries to make an onomastic research in a historical settlement in a current agglomeration of Leopoldov. It is based on an archival research of so far unprocessed cartographic sources from Vienna archives. He deals with the titles of relocated medieval villages such as Veresvar (earlier Bin) and Beregseg (current township Cervenik, Sulekovo), with terminated medieval hydronyms (Vazina, Canov, Boguna) as well as urbanonyms in the periphery of Leopoldov. Its up rise in the second half of 17th century meant a great change in the formation of the north-western part of Hlohovec region.
