In the period between the 6th/7th century and mid-13th century, in central Poland four chronological and settlement stages were isolated: 1. 6th/7th c. until the end of the 8th c.- the period of activity of the culture (group) known as Szeligi or Sukow-Dziedzice; 2. from the beginning of the 9th c. until about 950, (until the occupation of this territory by the state of the first Piasts) - a stage of the development of late tribal societies. A noticeable stabilization of settlement areas, first defensive structures are built, whereas the imports of luxurious weapons, ornaments and other objects (e.g., Silesian bowls) evidence the contacts with the southern cultural circle; 3. the stage of the monarchy of the first Piasts. The previously existing network of fortified strongholds was destroyed and new ones came to being. The cultural and settlement processes in that period were a reflection of transformations taking place in Great Poland proper; 4. from the mid-11th c. until the close of the early Middle Ages (about 1250) - the second Piast monarchy and the beginnings of fragmentation into provinces. Further stabilization of settlements and subsequent revolution in the structure of strongholds and administrative centres, from which, in the 12th and 13th century, there developed castellanies.
