(Title in Polish - 'Archiwista w muzeum; wspólpraca Archiwów Panstwowych z muzeami na przykladzie doswiadczen Archiwum Panstwowego w Lublinie'). For years the authoress - an archivist from the State Archive in Lublin - has been dealing with supervision over institutions producing archival material intended for permanent storage, and comprising state archival resources. Observations of the complicated cooperation between state archives and cultural institutions have inclined her towards reflections on the causes of this situation. Museums appeared to be the most interesting object of analyses due to their specificity and, predominantly, the concurrence of the work pursued by both institutions, which frequently turns into a source of controversies. The standards of archival supervision over assorted institutions have been described in great detail in the first part of the article, with references to the so-called archival law and normatives typical for the museum. In the next part the authoress presented her own hypotheses about the relations between various archives and the range of the resolutions of the Statute on national archival resources and museum archives. The portrayal of the not always conducive cooperation was based on a database conducted as part of the Department of Supervision over the Growing Archival Resources of the Lublin State Archive. She discusses the technical conditions of archives functioning within museums, the training of staff responsible for their realisation, and the implementation of post-control recommendations. Part III considers the earlier outlined information and attempts defining radical solutions of the difficulties emerging in the course of the functioning of both institutions. The authoress emphasised the necessity of a total involvement of archivists employed in museums in undertakings aimed at constructing a new professional group aware of its significance. The prime objective is to render people responsible for archival resources entrusted to them conscious of the importance of their activity as regards the protection of cultural property. The archivist in a museum is to fulfil one of the most valuable functions in the contemporary world - that of a custodian: the one whose task is to protect, guard and remember.
