The material study analyses the processes connected with exploring and creation of the military symbolism of a wider significance, in particular including the honorary and historical titles with their specific meaning and irreplaceable role in the education of the Army members, developing national and military traditions. Furthermore, the author analyses, characterises and describes the military symbolism connected with identification of the military ranks during individual development periods of the Army of the SR (The Armed Forces SR) as well as the military symbols – the badges identifying the types of troops and services. Last but not least, the study also solves the issue of military symbolism or the identification of symbols worn on the hats and the badges identifying the group of military university graduates. The appendix to the study contains picture material which graphically supplements the text of the study.

The second part of the study on the Slovak State Military Grammar School (ŠSVR) provides as yet unpublished information on the activity of this educational institution in 1943 -1945. In the wider historical context, the study describes not only the last whole school year of ŠSVR, unrealised proposals for the establishment of the ŠSVR Cadet Branch as well as the participation of the permanent staff of ŠSVR in the Slovak National Uprising (SNU) preparations. At the same time, the work deals with the fate of the main ŠSVR representatives and inmates who actively joined the SNU following the dissolution of the school due to the war events. The last part of the study addresses the efforts of the Home Defence to revive the ŠSVR activity.

The author of the study analyses and evaluates legislation of the dual media system in the Slovak Republic, stating that based on its functioning in the social and political practice, in spite of its deficits or shortages, the media system is viable and capable to further improve its activity and work contributing to the Slovak democratic society and the legal state. Furthermore, he points out to the positive role of radio broadcasting in Slovakia during the Slovak National Uprising in 1944. Similarly, a significant role was played by radio and television in 1968 during the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact forces. Both media operated in a positive way especially by informing and inviting the citizens to keep calm and silently resist to the occupation troops. Apart from that, both the Slovak Radio and the Slovak Television had also had a significant positive impact on the awareness of the members of armed forces as well as our citizens. The same applies for the operation and importance of the Army of the Slovak Republic and its operation in the UNO peacekeeping missions as well as on the rich cultural, educational, and sports activities of the members of Slovak armed forces. The army media, along with the ST media, have their irreplaceable role in the education to patriotism as well as in formation of the armed forces in the Slovak Republic.

Perceived safety or danger is a rising topic in the public psychology. The aim of this paper is to determine the relationship between the perception of safety and sense of coherence in specific sample of the Armed forces of the Slovak Republic. To measure sense of coherence we used questionnaire of life orientation from A. Antonovsky which focuses on personality-related stress-resistance resource. Perceived safety, we explored by the selected items using the main questionnaire from the 5th round of the European Social Survey (ESS). The sample consisted of 204 members of the armed forces of which 93.6% were males. The average age of respondents was 31.43 years (SD = 5,795). Task of members of the Armed forces is: to guarantee the security of the state against external attack by a foreign power, as well as obligations arising from international agreements by which the Slovak Republic is tied. Perceived safety can be in this particular sample negatively affected due to the nature of the profession, and we expect a significant relationship to personality related characteristics of the sense of coherence. Interpretation of the results will be described in more detail in the paper.

Based on a brief overview of both historical and contemporary practice abroad and home, the author demonstrates that the warrants have always been signed in own hand of the person awarding the honours and stamped by their official stamp, since that is the only way how they became valid and efficient for legal actions. The only known exception is represented by the warrants of appointment of some of the honours of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic, which are not signed or stamped and the name of the person awarding the honours is also missing, being replaced by their function with the “v.r.” abbreviation (“vlastnou rukou” - “manu propria”, “m.p.” - “in one’s own hand”). The author points out to the formal mistakes of these warrants, questioning the arguments why the warrants cannot be signed and at the same time submitting a proposal how to solve this issue.

As Atlantic Alliance aims to develop properly military capabilities, it has to pay special attention to military training, for only well-trained armed forces can take up the challenges and threats a state faces. The readiness level of the military is the major criterion for assessing the preparation of the armed forces to fulfill the objectives set for a state. Therefore, rational control and coordination of the servicemen’ training process is a very important factor in preparing contemporary Lithuanian Armed Forces. The Lithuanian Military Doctrine (2010) defines training principles of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and is a key document for preparing the military training strategy.
