The penetration of Western European culture at the end of the 19th century all over the world and especially in the Far Eastern realm was and still is an interesting topic for debates, comprising a large area, form accurate historical and sociological research until the most fanatical Europhobic scribbles. One of the most significant fields where this process is unfolding is musical culture. It is well-known that Western music was quickly and enthusiastically assimilated in the every-day life of Japanese and Koreans. Starting from the fruitful co-habitation between Western musical culture and Japanese musical tradition, the present essay proposes a discussion on the forms of cultural contamination and also aims at identifying some possible pre-existent features that might or might not facilitate the interpenetration of two distinct musical cultures.

It is well known that for Alexander the Great the Persian dynast Cyrus (559–530 BC) was an object of imitation; there was a tradition in antiquity that Alexander was “fond of Cyrus” (φιλόκυρος; philokyros). The purpose of this paper is to examine what kind of imitation it actually was, and how serious Alexander’s following of the Persian ruler was: did the famous Cyropaedia (The Education of Cyrus), a Greek tale of the Achaemenid king, play an important role as a source in Alexander’s calculations and actions or in his notions of how his own kingdom would look? It is argued that in this case the influence of Xenophon’s major work must have been intense, but that one should not seek it everywhere when examining Alexander’s expedition, or to understand such influence too literally, though there were a few cases where Alexander seems to have purposefully and publicly emphasised his close connection to Cyrus.

Any short review of the penetration of European music into Japan and its enthusiastic appropriation calls for a different approach to the controversial question of acculturation. The rapid growth in the pianos popularity in Japan, together with the implicit musical revolution, could also occasion a parallel with the similar process of acculturation which occurred in Eastern Europe (for instance the Romanian Principalities). Musical Westernization (including the institutional and educational reform) might, in contradicting the traditional local musical concepts, mirror a different perspective on intercultural communication and contemporary cultural education.

The article presents the activities of Alois Schwarz, a chemistry and natural history professor at the Landes- Oberrealschule (a type of regional high school) in Moravian Ostrava, author of numerous works and the organizer of international brewing congresses. He belonged to the social and political urban elite and he was a member of the city council for three terms. He also played an active role in local associations. In 1902, he founded a high school for girls, the Female High School (Mädchen- Lyzeum), which he managed for 20 years, promoting the model of modern education in the German language. He advocated the idea that Jews should adopt the German language and culture, which was believed to be universal, according to the general notion of humanism.

The repatriation, understood as the return to home of ancestors, not always looks as in imagination preceding the trip. Polish reality often differs from the imaginations of Poland constructed in Kazakhstan. Upon the arrival people feel disappointed, yet the return to Kazakhstan is impossible. The hard and painful process of cultural adaptation begins. It’s marked with greater or smaller successes and failures. The main motivation to conduct research focusing on the issues connected with Polish repatriates from Kazakhstan was the question on common characteristics of their adaptation to new conditions in Poland as well as the main origins of difficulties and the ways of overcoming them. Quite interesting were also their ways of interpreting the new reality, main cultural differences and cultural shock dynamics. The author was also inspired by meetings with newcomers and conducted talks. They have revealed the significant relationship between particular personal characteristics, so-called “general approach towards life” (expressed here as a theoretical model of the “sense of coherence”), and ways of overcoming misfortunes and difficulties in the new place. This article is an introduction to the more advanced issues of interdisciplinary research using methods and tools taken from ethnology and psychology. Selected aspects of repatriates’ lives were discussed here in order to present the most common adaptation challenges facing them as well as the ways of overcoming them. Repatriates often admit that Poland disappointed them. It can be explained in the means of cultural shock and its dynamics as well as confrontation with reality, which turned out to be more complicated than expected.

Uwarunkowania kulturowe wywierają duży wpływ na zachowania nabywcze konsumentów, zwłaszcza tych znajdujących się w warunkach akulturacji. Rozpoznaniu uwarunkowań zmian zachowań konsumentów dokonujących się w wyniku akulturacji posłużyły badania zrealizowane zgodnie z podejściem interpretacyjnym  metodologią studium przypadku. W artykule zaprezentowano rozpoznane uwarunkowania kulturowe determinujące zmiany dokonujące się w zachowaniach nabywczych polskich konsumentów mieszkających na stałe we Francji, Niemczech i w Wielkiej Brytanii.

Culture-related determinants significantly influence consumers’ purchasing behaviours, especially of those consumers who find themselves in conditions of acculturation. Cognition and understanding of determinants of changes in consumer behaviours that are observed as a result of acculturation are facilitated by the research that was conducted employing an interpretative approach – a case study methodology. The article presents identified culture-related determinants that affect purchasing behaviours of Polish consumers who reside in France, Germany and Great Britain.

While Max Scheler’s acculturation problematic is once more topical, under the better known term “globalisation” (in the sense of westernisation), there are vectors in our culture that appear to run counter to this unifying trend. In our article, we examine one of Czesław Miłosz’s poetic intuitions that is today “embodied” in the writings of François Cheng, the Chinese-born French poet and thinker. In his essays on beauty, we analyse the swinging back and forth between poetry, thought and painting; we also examine the meeting of Eastern (Buddhist and Taoist) and Western (Christian) thought; a meeting that Cheng and Miłosz particularly perceived in the pantings of Cézanne and which, while constituting a link between these two traditions, would, according to them, also make up for the greatest western weakness, i.e. Cartesianism.

Artykuł jest próbą poszukiwania metodologicznego paradygmatu, za który przyjąłem jakościowe badania nad problematyką wielokulturowości. Zachętą intelektualną do podjęcia prezentowanego zagadnienia była tematyka międzynarodowej polsko-nowozelandzkiej konferencji dotyczącej społeczności międzykulturowych i relacji pomiędzy nimi. Natomiast inspiracja metodologiczna wiąże się z próbą eksploracyjnego sprawdzenia jakościowego narzędzia badawczego. Narzędziem tym jest arkusz z dyspozycjami do pogłębionego ukierunkowanego wywiadu do badania społeczności wielokulturowych. W poszczególnych punktach artykułu omówiono najbardziej istotne kwestie dotyczące założeń teoretycznych, kategorii metodologicznych i prezentacji narzędzia badawczego. Merytoryczna treść narzędzia badawczego została zawarta w sześciu blokach tematycznych.

This article is an attempt to work out a methodological device for qualitative research on multicultural questions. The intellectual challenge to tackle this problem was provided by the binational Polish- New Zealand conference, broaching the issue of multicultural societies and the relations/interactions between its separate parties. The methodological impulse for our investigation lay in the checkout of the scope and suitability of quality research as a scientific implement. Our research instrument is a questionnaire consisting of questions for a detailed guided interview to study multicultural communities. The respective chapters of this paper present the main issues of our work: the theoretical premises, methodological categories and the presentation of our research implement. The contents of the research instrument consist of six topical units.
