The object of this study is the concept of ‘home’ in Amharic, with special attention paid to linguistic data and its cultural background. This paper focuses mainly on lexical resources such as proverbs, idiomatic expressions, collocations as well as cultural data. The aim is to specify and describe the prototypical as well as modern idea of home in Amharic culture and language and an attempt to systematise this idea. To date the concept of Amharic home has been discussed in very general terms, while home, as the most primary environment for people, is a rich source of knowledge about the whole society. Therefore the present analysis of the concept of ‘home’ has been based on ethnolinguistic research methods. This kind of analysis can shed light on our knowledge of Ethiopian society. This analysis is primarily based on three Amharic-Amharic dictionaries and one Amharic-English dictionary as well as on other language studies such as the anthology of Amharic collocations and proverbs and culture-oriented monographs. The results of this study indicate that the concept of ‘home’ functions in two spheres – physical and social – that allow us to distinguish the most important features to understand Amhara society.
