The survey article should serve as an information for educationists about the situation of andragogy (theory and research of adult education) in the Czech Republic. First, a brief explanation is presented based on definitions of andragogy and its main themes. The second part describes centres of andragogy in five Czech universities. Later on, an overview of main publications of Czech andragogy is given with respect of their relevance for educationists. Finally, some weak features of Czech andragogy are mentioned, especially a lack of empirical research of adult education and learning. This is just an area in which some methods of educational research can be usefully applied.

In the modern world and in the modern perceived system of continuing education, the adult education occupies a special place. It covers various stages in a person's life, not only the production period and the period of stabilization, but also the pre-retirement or retirement period. Each of these periods is characterized by different needs as well as educational, social and caring problems. Purpose. Search of optimal ways for personal and professional life-long self-perfection of a person in accordance with theoretical and methodological principles of the pedagogics. Methods. The work uses a method of critical analysis of the results of practical experience as well as the structural and functional analysis, the systematization, and generalization methods. Conclusion. The developmental potential conducive to learning was considered to be inexhaustible, constituting a sufficient base for activating the processes of learning of a person for the rest of his or her life. The educational possibilities exist throughout entire life and they are diverse as well as multi-conditioned by the whole way of life of an adult person. According to Elżbieta Dubas, the human life - development - learning constitute a kind of ontological and anthropological triad defining humanity. The learning is important for being a human and for becoming a human. The high value of knowledge, defining the social position of a person, forces to permanent learning, allowing to renew, to expand and to improve knowledge ass well as to forget this unhelpful, and to acquire this needed knowledge in order to be able to live efficiently and satisfactively in an ever-changing world.

We współczesnym świecie i nowocześnie postrzeganym systemie edukacji ustawicznej, edukacja dorosłych zajmuje szczególne miejsce. Obejmuje różne etapy w życiu człowieka, nie tylko okres produkcyjny i okres stabilizacji, ale także okres przedemerytalny czy emerytalny. Każdy z tych okresów charakteryzuje się odmiennymi potrzebami oraz problemami oświatowymi, wychowawczymi, społecznymi i opiekuńczymi. Cel pracy. Celem pracy jst poszukiwanie optymalnych sposób osobistego i zawodowego samodoskonalenia osoby, zgodnie z teoretycznymi i metodologicznymi zasadami pedagogiki. Materiały i metody badawcze. W pracy zastosowano metodę krytycznej analizy wyników doświadczeń praktycznych, analizę strukturalno-funkcjonalną, systematyzację, uogólnienie. Wnioski. Potencjał rozwojowy sprzyjający uczeniu się uznano za niewyczerpywalny, stanowiący dostateczną bazę uaktywniania procesów uczenia się człowieka do końca jego życia. Możliwości edukacyjne istnieją przez całe życie, są one zróżnicowane, wielorako uwarunkowane całą drogą życiową człowiek dorosłego. Jak pisze Elżbieta Dubas, życie ludzkie – rozwój – uczenie się stanowią swoistą triadę ontologiczno – antropologiczną określającą człowieczeństwo. Uczenie się jest ważne dla bycia, stawania się człowiekiem. Wysoka wartość wiedzy, określająca pozycję społeczną człowieka, zmusza do permanentnego uczenia się, pozwalającego na odnawianie, poszerzanie, udoskonalanie wiedzy, zapominanie tej nieprzydatnej, a nabywanie potrzebnej, aby móc sprawnie oraz satysfakcjonująco żyć we wciąż zmieniającym się świecie.
