Prof. Andrzej Ryszkiewicz (1922–2005), an art historian and Varsavianist, was a distinguished researcher and an expert in the Polish painting, in French and Polish artistic relations and in the 18th- and 19th-century cultural art scene. Furthermore, he was a respected teacher and educator of several generations of Polish art historians, a renowned specialist in the history of Polish art collecting, and a consummate art collector himself. For decades, his publications have served as the primary reference for researchers dealing with art collecting and collectors themselves. The Professor’s outstanding achievement involves “Katalog kolekcjonerów polskich XIX i XX wieku” (Catalogue of Polish 19th- and 20th-Century Art Collectors) (hereinafter: the “Catalogue”) started in 1978 in co-operation with the Museology Department of the Historical Monuments Documentation Centre. The Catalogue was meant to be the preparation for a publication entitled “Informatorium do dziejów muzealnictwa i kolekcjonerstwa polskiego” (On History of Polish Museology and Art Collecting). Until 2011, the Catalogue existed as a set of catalogue fiches (approx. 6,100). It was divided into two sub-catalogues. The first was an index of names of collectors where fiches contained last names of the collectors, presented in an alphabetic order, and a reference to a location where their collection was held. The second index was the index of locations, also alphabetically listed, in which under the name of the location where the collection was held, the surname of the collector was repeated. It was followed by the information as to what the collector collected, and with bibliographical references in which the information on the given collection could be found. For objective reasons, the aforementioned “Informatorium” has never been prepared for publication. The Catalogue was accompanied by the bibliography, prepared by Prof. Ryszkiewicz. In 2011, once the Catalogue had been moved to the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections, its electronic version in the form of an Excel database (with 3,049 records) was prepared with a view to archiving and digitalising it and for its future potential development for purposes related to the Institute’s statutory activities. The Excel version represents in extenso the information from the fiches and it can be consulted upon a request filed with the Institute. Similarly as the original fiche-based Catalogue, this version, in a modern and user-friendly form, can serve as a starting point for further search for researchers interested in the Polish art collecting, and it can act as a source of information helpful in more advanced analyses and syntheses.

Profesor Andrzej Ryszkiewicz (1922–2005), historyk sztuki, warszawiak, był wybitnym badaczem i znawcą malarstwa polskiego, francusko-polskich związków artystycznych oraz kultury artystycznej XVIII-XIX w, a także cenionym dydaktykiem i wychowawcą kilku pokoleń polskich historyków sztuki, oraz wybitnym znawcą dziejów kolekcjonerstwa polskiego i wytrawnym kolekcjonerem. Jego publikacje od dziesięcioleci są podstawową literaturą dla badaczy kolekcjonerstwa i samych kolekcjonerów. Wielką zasługą Profesora jest opracowanie „Katalogu kolekcjonerów polskich XIX i XX wieku” [dalej Katalog], który powstawał od 1978 r., we współpracy z Działem Muzealnictwa Ośrodka Dokumentacji Zabytków. Katalog miał być przygotowaniem do publikacji pt. Informatorium do dziejów muzealnictwa i kolekcjonerstwa polskiego. Katalog do 2011 r. istniał w formie zbioru fiszek katalogowych (ok. 6100), podzielony na dwa podkatalogi: pierwszy z nich to indeks osobowy kolekcjonerów – na fiszkach zapisane są, w układzie alfabetycznym, nazwiska kolekcjonerów, a także odniesienie do miejscowości, w której znajdowała się ich kolekcja; drugi – indeks miejscowości, także w układzie alfabetycznym – pod nazwą miejscowości, w której znajdowała się kolekcja, powtórzone jest nazwisko kolekcjonera, następnie znajduje się informacja o tym, co kolekcjoner zbierał, na końcu – zapis pozycji bibliograficznych, w których można znaleźć informację o tej kolekcji. Wspomniane Informatorium nigdy nie zostało przygotowane do druku z przyczyn obiektywnych. Katalogowi towarzyszyła, sporządzona przez prof. A. Ryszkiewicza, bibliografia wydawnictw, z których Profesor dokonywał ekscerpcji. W 2011 r., kiedy Katalog został przeniesiony do Narodowego Instytutu Muzealnictwa i Ochrony Zbiorów (NIMOZ), w dbałości o jego archiwizację, digitalizację oraz ewentualne opracowanie na potrzeby związane ze statutową działalnością Instytutu opracowano jego wersję elektroniczną – bazę w EXCELU (3049 rekordów). Jest ona in extenso przeniesieniem informacji z fiszek i można się z nią zapoznać, zwracając się o to z prośbą do NIMOZ. Podobnie, jak pierwotny Katalog „fiszkowy” – w tej nowoczesnej, łatwej w obsłudze formie – może stanowić dla badaczy polskiego kolekcjonerstwa punkt wyjścia do dalszych poszukiwań i być źródłem informacji przydatnym do głębszych analiz i syntez.
