The essay, focusing on architecture in the nineteenth-century partitioned Poland, is an attempt to read its meanings in the context of the colonial policies of Russia, Prussia, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The analyzed material includes selected buildings and city centers of Poznań, Warsaw, and  Cracow, while the problems addressed are the encoding of urban space  meanings and its deciphering in the context of complex nineteenth-century Polish history.

Nach der griechischen Auffassung von Kunst als Technik (techne) ist Architektur eine Baukunst, die festen Regeln des Kunstschaffens unterliegt. Die Idee der Schönheit geht jedoch über einen starren Rahmen des Kanons hinaus, da kalón nicht nur einen ästhetischen, sondern auch einen ethischen und religiösen Charakter hat. Religiöse Objekte sind offen für die Welt und andere Menschen (horizontale Dimension) und für das Jenseits und Götter oder Gott (vertikale Dimension). Die Fundamentalontologie von Heidegger führt uns zur wahren Natur der Schönheit, die die Beziehungen zwischen Erde und Himmel, zwischen den Göttlichen und Sterblichen erneuert. Sie lehrt uns, dass Bauen, Wohnen und Denken im Wesentlichen die gleiche Quelle haben. Um dem Bedürfnis nach Schönheit und Benutzerfreundlichkeit gerecht zu werden, müssen beim Entwerfen nicht nur Maße und Proportionen, sondern auch diese Beziehungen berücksichtigt werden. Auf diese Weise werden das Haus des Seins und die Behausung des Menschenwesens gehütet.

According to the Greek approach to art as techne, architecture is the art of construction and is subject to the established rules of art creation. The idea of beauty, however, exceeds the rigid frame of the canon since kalón not only has an aesthetic character, but also an ethical and religious one. Religious buildings are open to the world and other people (the horizontal dimension) and to the afterworld and gods or God (the vertical dimension). The fundamental ontology of Heidegger guides us to the true nature of beauty, one which renews relationships between earth and sky, between divinities and mortals. It teaches us that building, dwelling and thinking share the same source. When designing, it is necessary not only to keep measure and proportions in mind in order to meet the need for beauty and usability, but also to take into account these relationships. In this way, the house of being and the home of man’s essence are protected.

Zgodnie z greckim ujęciem sztuki jako techne, architektura jest sztuką konstrukcyjną podlegającą ustalonym regułom tworzenia. Idea piękna przekracza jednak sztywne ramy kanonu, gdyż kalón ma nie tylko estetyczny, ale także etyczny i religijny charakter. Obiekty sakralne są otwarte na świat i innych ludzi (wymiar horyzontalny) oraz na zaświaty i bogów lub Boga (wymiar wertykalny). Ku prawdzie piękna prowadzi nas ontologia fundamentalna Heideggera, która odnawia związki między Ziemią i Niebem, Istotami Boskimi i Śmiertelnymi. Uczy ona, że budowanie, mieszkanie i myślenie są źródłowo tożsame. Podczas projektowania należy nie tylko zachowywać miarę i proporcje, aby sprostać potrzebie piękna i użyteczności, ale też uwzględniać owe związki. W ten sposób strzeże się domu bycia i domostwa istoty człowieka.

Im Artikel werden die Beziehungen zwischen dem Wasser als architektonischem Medium und der Kultur von Wilna dargestellt. Das Hauptanliegen ist dabei die Bezeichnung der sozialen und ästhetischen Rolle des Wassers in der Entwicklung der Wilnaer Architektur unter Berücksichtigung des Wandels im Bereich der Werte und Konzepte des urbanen Designs. In der Architektur von Wilna spiegelt das Wasser die Grundsätze der Funktionalität und der künstlerischen Konzepte wider, die für einige unterschiedliche Epochen charakteristisch waren. In der Schlussfolgerung stelle ich fest, dass die Beziehungen zwischen dem Wasser und der litauischen Kulturidentität schwach sind, so dass dieses architektonische Medium eher durch äußere Kräfte als Mittel der sozialen Suggestion, als zur Befriedigung der inneren Bedürfnisse der litauischen Kultur verwendet wurde. Die aktuell geführten Diskussionen haben jedoch ein Potenzial für zukünftigen Wandel.

This article attempts to present an overview of the connection between water, seen as an architectural medium, and the culture of Vilnius City. The main purpose is to identify the social and aesthetic role of water for the development of architecture in Vilnius, taking into account the changes in cultural values and concepts pertaining to urban design. In the architecture of Vilnius, water reflects the principles of functionality and artistic concepts characteristic for several different periods. The conclusions reveal that the connection established between water and the Lithuanian cultural identity has been weak, therefore this architectural medium was used more by external forces as a mean of social suggestion, rather than to satisfy the internal needs of the Lithuanian culture. Nevertheless, the discourse that has been forming over the recent years may have a certain potential for future change.

Artykuł przedstawia powiązania między wodą, rozumianą jako medium architektoniczne, a kulturą Wilna. Głównym celem jest określenie społecznej i estetycznej roli, jaka woda pełni w rozwoju wileńskiej architektury, przy uwzględnieniu przemian w obszarze wartości i koncepcji dotyczących urbanistycznego design. W architekturze Wilna woda odbija zasady funkcjonalności i artystycznych koncepcji charakterystycznych dla kilku różnych okresów.   konkluzji stwierdzam, że powiązania między wodą a litewską tożsamością kulturową są słabe, zatem to architektoniczne medium było raczej używane przez zewnętrzne siły jako środek społecznej sugestii, niż do zaspokajania wewnętrznych potrzeb kultury litewskiej. Niemniej prowadzone obecnie dyskusje niosą pewien potencjał,  gdy idzie o przyszłą zmianę.
