The paper is an attempt to specify main research directions in the field of library science based on the analysis of topics discussed in the articles published in three leading library science and librarianship journals: 'College and Research Libraries', 'The Library Quarterly' and 'The Journal of Academic Librarianship' in the years 2003-2007. Several prominent research topics were observed. The most frequent publications are papers on library management and education on information and communication (information literacy). The second group includes articles discussing library users, library usage, the librarian profession and education. Other important study topics are: library websites, digitization, digital libraries, evaluation of library quality and information services. Topics closer to the information studies rather than the research on library science and librarianship are reflected in numerous bibliometric, informetric and webometric analyses.
