Can we give a simple answer to the question which segment of book is more important? Is it its visual appearance or its textual content? Some people surely can. Readers, though, see it differently. They see book as a whole, so it should be seen as a whole even in the process of its creation. In the model situation the artist and the author of the text would have the same artistic intention, or even better, they would be one person. A question of form and content of a book is widely explored in the phenomenon of artist’s book. It is usually made by a single author who presents through it his or her artistic self or comments on certain aspect of objective reality. The artist’s book has already entered the realm of children’s book, with all its specificity. The artist’s book for children could, thus, lead to a better interaction between author and percipient. Attempts of such kind can be found in our book market under the name of so called collector’s books.

This article focuses on the defining of comics as an ‘amalgam’ in which the verbal category merges with the pictorial/iconic. The articles first discusses the concepts of the literary and the pictorial and then points out that these are discrete aesthetic categories, independent of the category of artistry. The author then moves on to selected phenomena that occur in the space between these two concepts: the picture book or illustrated book, and the book as artefact or visual poetry, particularly from an historical perspective. Apart from the explicit links with comics, a few phenomena important for defining its limits are highlighted. The author then specifies the opinion held hitherto that there is an opposition between the ‘verbal’ and the ‘pictorial’ in distinguishing between the two, and this opposition is also problematized. The mutual relations between word and picture are outlined in general terms and mainly in comics. In some means of expression the boundary between the two is even eradicated.

The numerous books designed by Leon Urbański (1926–1998), a distinguished Polish 20th-century typographer, included, in particular, a series published by the Polish Oriental Society between 1966 and 1987 at the Ossoliński National Institute. The series was important for the artist himself and was also highly valued by specialists, a fact confirmed by numerous awards. The article analyses the most interesting volumes in terms of their graphics and typography, showing the designer’s inspirations and his fascination with the Middle and Far East. The typographic analysis covers not only books published by the Ossolineum, but also book designs made by Urbański. A comparative analysis reveals significant differences between the designs and the end products, providing material for reflection on the work of the artist and the possibilities of publishing his designs. When comparing the books with the designs, it is easier to understand the essence of Leon Urbański’s work – the significance of the detail and of precision.

The study deals with the personality and work of Hana Gregorová. The analysis and interpretation of her debut book Ženy (Women) is used in an attempt to define the basic poetry-like principles of her writing style. The contrastive method is used to confront the literary-critical and literary-historical views of Hana Gregorová´s work. The interpretation forms the basis of the author ś attempt to describe her creative method and decide to what extent she approaches the Realistic method. The negative attitude of the contemporary criticism towards the author was determined by several factors, which were the reasons why her work has not been assessed in terms of literary quality to date, and has been rejected due to her extreme opinions. The main goal of the study is to outline possible starting points for interpretation of Hana Gregorová´s work related to her debut book and to assess objectively its literary qualities. The author deals marginally with the feminist views on her work.
