Modern Brazil deserves more international focus due to its new-found political and economic stability. Not only is it described as an emerging power, but it is included into BRIC countries. The international success of Brazil stems from, among others, the fruitful presidency of Lula, the discovery of new vast “pre-salt” oil fields in the deep waters, the involvement in the regional projects and the efficient strategies of emerging from the world economic recession. The article gives a general overview of the politics of president Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva in the last years of his governance in Brazil (2003–2010), as well as presents the strategies of present internal, defence and foreign policies of Latin-American emerging giant. All the steps being taken prove that contemporary Brazil is taking its place on the international stage once more, being ready to make its mark.

The article deals with the activities of the first Czech visitors to Brazil. They travelled there as soldiers in the service of the Dutch West Indies Company (WIC). The company strove to establish commercial bases and colonies in the period 1630-1654 in conflict with the Portuguese, but in the end it failed. The theme is placed in the wider context of Dutch expansion in the Atlantic region, which reached its peak in the second quarter of the 17th century.

Capoeira jako politicky funkční fenomén

EN
Capoeira is a Brazilian cultural phenomenon. It is a motion activity at the boundary of fight, dance and play accompanied by specific music and songs, whose outstanding feature is a unique leading musical instrument. Today, capoeira serves as a legacy of slavery because it originates in mingling of the dragged Africans´ cultures with the new environment suppressing every human liberty. The essay deals with the development of capoeira within the political relations of the country. It follows how capoeira reflects the changes of political regimes in Brazil, pointing out that the phenomenon - because of its character - entered into the political events directly, having become a bearer of certain ideas. The author comes to a conclusion that the political significance of the observed phenomenon has changed lately and capoeira is becoming rather an instrument of social mechanisms. The issue if the phenomenon is influencing the political events even today or if it can be a part of political programs remains opened, leaving room for next research.

The growing popularity of archaeology and the amassment of new archaeological researches compelled archaeologist to make an interpretations based on different domains of humanistic sciences. This interdisciplinary studies allow to look at the problem of reconstructing the past from a different perspectives. Since most significant issues had multiple causes, interdisciplinary studies provide a more comprehensive understanding of issues. The cooperation of different domains of sciences (archaeology, ethnology and cultural anthropology) is essential for studying the past. It is particularly important for the Brazilian Amazon where the great part of cultural processes could not be seen in an archaeological context.

Th e purpose of this article is to analyze the daily and festive food practices of descendants of Polish immigrants in Brazil in the context of their collective and individual identities. Th e research was conducted by the participant observation method, the author also conducted formal and informal interviews, and also observed the activity of Brazilians of Polish origin on the Internet (Facebook, blogosphere). Th e author focuses primarily on one product: dumplings, which are considered “typical food” for descendants of Poles. She shows how dumplings, as an easy-to-prepare, nutritious and cheap dish, are reproduced in the Polish community in the public and private spaces, becoming part of the cultural diaspora program during various festivals. It argues that dumplings, like other products considered „typical”, are susceptible to patrimonialization because they are at the center of the identity of the diaspora. At the same time, it proposes to move beyond the ethnic and national perspectives and show that eating habits are part of the rural, central-European identity, shared with the descendants of Ukrainians and emigrants from Western Pomerania, related to a similar way of life and modes of farming.
