The author undertakes to present the concept of the reform of the American immigration system, as articulated by the President, George W. Bush in his State of the Nation address to the Congress, delivered in January 2007. The first part of the contribution describes the principles on which, according to the President, a comprehensive change to the system should be based. Specific actions, which, in the President's opinion, need to be undertaken are described further. The next section of the essay analyses them in detail, in the context of their effectiveness, their actual feasibility and the chances of their application in the American political realities. In conclusion, the article extensively recapitulates the reaction of the Republican Party to the President's idea and explains why his initiative failed.

This study reflects changes of priorities in American Africa policy since September 11, 2001. It presents major territorial interests and the most debated issues including terrorism, development, HIV/ AIDS, and democracy. It does not deal with the US competition with China or other international powers in Africa but presents rather an overview of American policy in Africa. The major focus is given to the period of George W. Bush government while contemporary Obama administrative is rather neglected since it is too early to make an analysis of Obama’s Africa policy. Moreover, we can see continuity in American Africa policy since September 11 and it seems that Obama’s government will not mean any direct changes in these trends.
