Focusing on transcription of handwritten texts, the study provides an addendum to Josef Vintr’s Zásady transkripce českých textů z barokní doby [The Principles of transcription of Czech Baroque texts], published in Listy filologické 121, 1998, pp. 341–346. It does not offer a normative instruction but a general methodological reflection and a summary of aids to creating principles of transcribing particular texts. After discussing basic differences between scribal and printing practices, it deals with some problematic features typical of scribal orthography. The study primarily concentrates on the problem of long and short vowels and the most frequent differences between modern and Baroque vowel length. It is argued that the principles of transcription should be formulated according to the individual grammatical usage of the individual scribe, and distinctive features of the text should be preserved as much as possible.

The field of comparative literature has yet to consider in depth the connections between early modern Spain and Bohemia. This article discusses one of the most interesting aspects of this broader comparative theme: parallel motifs and themes in the works of J. A. Comenius and of Baltasar Gracian. The specialist literature has tackled this subject, but many of the questions regarding similarities between the two authors remained unanswered. The focus in this contribution is in particular on the similarities and differences between Comenius' 'Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart' and Gracian's 'El Criticon'. The style and structure of both works are described, and some of the typical problems of the Baroque mind - such as the critique of Humanism, the search for a practical philosophy and the tension between visions of the world as harmony and as chaos - are considered. These themes are, of course, more or less common to other writers of the period, and it is therefore suggested that sources which might have been used by both Comenius and Gracian are studied. An effort is made to trace the common textual influence of the Greek satirist Lucian of Samosata on both authors; this, however, remains a hypothesis, which might serve to provoke a more thorough investigation of the influence of Lucian on Renaissance and Baroque writers, and of his contribution to the origin of the modern novel.

This paper assesses the works of Professor Alexandr Stich (1934–2003) devoted to the literature of the Early Modern era (especially the Baroque). This influential literary historian, linguist and textual critic turned his attention to Baroque literature mainly after 1989, and it remained at the centre of his interest until his death. The article delineates the various areas of Stich’s research into 16th–18th century literature (evaluative surveys, synthetic studies, interpretations of individual works, studies of motifs manifesting themselves in various eras of literary history). The author analyzes Stich’s ‘linguistic-literary’ method which combines literary history with linguistic methodology, placing it in the context of traditional philological research and studies of literary stylistics. Stich’s focus on the interpretation of texts and his analysis of key motifs of Baroque literature is assessed alongside his application of newer trends incorporating the external contexts of literary works (cultural studies, New Historicism).

Pomimo skąpych informacji o pisarzu i jego twórczości w opracowaniach naukowych, nawet krótkie wzmianki o poecie zawierają pochlebnie opinie o nim, akcentujące przede wszystkim dużą wartość jednego dzieła – Symfonii anielskich.

The aim of this article is an attempt at popularizing Jan Żabczyc’s writings. Żabczyc was a very popular early Baroque court poet who nowadays seems to be unappreciated and lost among the great names of his times. He was well acclaimed in his lifetime, but since 18th century, when a change in literary tastes took place, his legacy started to sink into oblivion. There is not too much information concerning his life and activity in the critical works, those authors who mention him, however, regard his poems as works of high literary value, emphasizing one particular collection of his poems (Christmas carols) Symfonie anielskie. Żabczyc is best known for his carols, but he was also able to show literary skill in his other poems. Certainly his writings deserve to be discovered anew, and in effect appreciated again.
