W artykule badano pojmowanie bezpieczeństwa wewnętrznego przez małe państwa „starej” Unii Europejskiej po zakończeniu zimnej wojny, posiłkując się studium przypadku członków Beneluksu. Starano się przedstawić nie tylko obecny stan bezpieczeństwa wewnętrznego w państwach Unii Beneluksu, lecz także wskazać na ewolucję w pojmowaniu bezpieczeństwa. Małe i średnie państwa UE są zmuszone do związania się z państwami większymi (lub organizacjami takimi jak UE) bądź zawiązywania porozumień (np. Beneluks). Rzutuje to także na przyjmowane koncepcje bezpieczeństwa wewnętrznego w tych państwach.

The article examines the understanding of the internal security of the small states of the “old” European Union after the Cold War, using a case study of the members of the Benelux Union. The author has made an attempt to identify not only the current state of internal security of the Benelux states, but also to underline the evolution in the understanding of security. Small and medium-sized EU countries are forced to associate with larger states (or organizations such as the EU) or to join the agreements (e.g. Benelux). This process affects also the concepts of internal security of these states.
