History in Bogdan Nawroczyński’s life and work manifested itself in three ways: 1. in his personal life, when he made history as a participant in the 1905 school strikes, 2. in his works serving as a research source in the fields of history and education, and – most importantly – 3. in his own research on the history of pedagogical thought. By highlighting the humanistic aspect of pedagogy as, first and foremost, a broadly defined study of humanity, Nawroczyński called attention to the need to place pedagogical research in the historical and sociological context. He saw it as necessary for pedagogy to become a fully-fledged academic field.

The article is a contemporary reading of Bogdan Nawroczyński’s pedagogy as a humanistic-social applied science. This was done through the analysis of his scientifi c legacy within the philosophical-ideological assumptions, and then through the interpretation and identification of its areas, where it is understood as one of humanities and as a social and applied (practical) science. Understanding the conditions of its development by Nawroczyński, as well as not losing the cultural, national and identity reasons of the pedagogical processes, justifies that in the sense of its meaning and essence lies not only the humanistic and social dimension, but also the applicability of developed regularities. Arguments indicated in these issues by Nawroczyński are timeless and, unfortunately, they have not been used in the Polish „change ‚89”. Their core consists in the assertions that: except of issues common to other nations, in the life of our nation may arise problems proper only for it, to which foreign concepts will not bring the answers; the development of the nation and culture requires in each turning point of their history a broad diagnosis of the contemporary times: the diagnosis of needs and development trends. Th ey are the basis for verification of the chosen directions of educational activity and development of the discipline that engages it.

Artykuł prezentuje charakterystykę badań w zakresie historiografii pedagogicznej Bogdana Nawroczyńskiego i Kazimierza Sośnickiego, którzy zdobyli podstawowe kompetencje i stopnie naukowe pod opieką Kazimierza Twardowskiego. Jego teoria czynności i wytworów legła u podstaw historiografii pedagogicznej B. Nawroczyńskiego. W przypadku K. Sośnickiego to powinowactwo z Mistrzem jest widoczne w metodologicznej i logicznej orientacji badań. Obaj uczeni konstruowali w duchu K. Twardowskiego pedagogikę filozoficzną, której integralnym składnikiem były analizy temporalne.

Research issues and academic achievements of the faculty of the Department of Pedagogy and Teaching at Poznań University in 1919–1939 on the centennial of the establishment of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (1919–2019). In its early days, Poznań University attracted a large number of researchers representing many disciplines of science but prevailing humanities. Poznań was a centre of very dynamic research into pedagogy and psychology. Initially, the Department of Pedagogy and Teaching at Poznań University focused on just a few research fields and areas. In the lead were issues related to the theory of upbringing, educating adults and the history of upbringing. In the local Department of Pedagogy and Teaching, a number of contributions was made to teaching and the methodology of some teaching subjects. In the Interwar Period, the following research areas were pursued by the pedagogy teachers at Poznań University: Antoni Danysz’ progressive-national trend referring to the ideological traditions of the Revolutions of 1848; Ludwik Jaxa-Bykowski’s nationalist-anthropological trend resulting from nationalist conflicts and efforts to reinforce the nation with special emphasis placed on the first decade of Poland’s independence; Marian Wachowski’s nationalist-imperialistic trend based on German philosophical pedagogy.

The starting point for the discussion is the obvious statement that cultural pedagogy is one of the three main currents in German education sciences; the other two are empirical and critical pedagogy. As the title suggests, the author focuses on cultural pedagogy only, and in particular on the reception of German cultural pedagogy by Polish cultural pedagogy during the interwar period. One can definitely say that German Geisteswissenschaften, or “the sciences of spirit” (including pedagogy) influenced Polish humanities. The main thesis of the article is that although the geisteswissenschaftliche Pädagogik had an overwhelming influence on pedagogical thinking and actions in Poland before World War II, it became considerably marginalised or almost totally forgotten after the war, as it was proclaimed a “bourgeois relic” and an “old fashioned trinket”. Theodor Litt (1880–1962) and Eduard Spranger (1882–1963) are commonly considered the leading representatives of German cultural pedagogy, and their Polish counterparts are Bogdan Nawroczyński (1882–1974) and Bogdan Suchodolski (1902–1993). The article refers to original source literature – although in brief – to discuss the influence of the educational concepts of the former group on the latter one. By proposing such analysis, the author hopes for fair and critical restructuring of cultural pedagogy in Poland, if not for its revitalisation. The first signs are already there.

The article presents the academic profiles of the professors of the Faculty of Education at the University of Warsaw who published their papers in “The Pedagogical Quarterly”. Since 1956 the magazine, whose founder was Prof. Bogdan Suchodolski, has been closely related to the Faculty of Education. The material about professors’ scientific research and careers at the Faculty of Education was compiled mostly on the basis of personal documents stored in the Archive of the University of Warsaw. Articles and studies complemented the project.
