Procesy urbanizacji obszaru Aglomeracji Górnośląskiej doprowadziły do wykształcenia specyficznych struktur miejskich. Ich cechą charakterystyczną są poprzemysłowe przestrzenie położone niejednokrotnie w obszarach śródmiejskich. Są to zazwyczaj zaniedbane tereny po zakładach przemysłowych powstałych w XIX i na przełomie XIX i XX w. Niektóre z nich mają wybitne wartości architektoniczne, a wszystkie dotyczą historii, tożsamości Górnego Śląska. Niektóre zostały zrewitalizowane i pełnią różnorodne funkcje, jednak większość pozostaje opuszczona. Jedną z form wykorzystania tych obiektów jest ich adaptacja przez wprowadzenie do wnętrz brył budynków tzw. farm wertykalnych. Przekształcone w wertykalne farmy produkujące żywność piętrowo, mogłyby zaopatrywać mieszkańców aglomeracji i być alternatywnym sposobem rewitalizacji.

The processes of urbanization of today’s Upper Silesian Agglomeration have led to the development of the specific urban structures. One of the special features of the Agglomeration are post-industrial spaces located often in the downtowns or in the central cities areas. These are usually the neglected industrial areas created in the late 19th and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of them have an outstanding architectural values, and all of them testify to the identity of Upper Silesia. Some of them have been revitalized and they perform various functions, but most of them remain deserted. One of the forms of use of these buildings is their adaptation by introducing the vertical farms. The buildings, transformed into the vertical farms, could supply the inhabitants of the Agglomeration of vegetables. The new function could to be an alternative way of the revitalization. Such action would promote also the sustainable development of degraded industrial areas.
