Yiddish Cinema in the Prewar Polish Lands: The Socio-political and Cultural Contexts The article is an attempt to consider the impact of social-political contexts on Yiddish cinema in Poland before the outbreak of the Second World War. It also analyses the influence of cultural and ideological tendencies represented by the diaspora in Poland: traditional – related to Judaism and Yiddish language; Zionist – trying to resurrect Israel and appealing to Hebrew as the language of the Jews; Bund – a left wing party that supported a secular Yiddish culture and opposed Zionism, as well as the assimilation of Polish culture and language.
The increasingly critical situation of the Jewish minority and the bankruptcy of the previously dominant political orientations within the Jewish community created a new set of opportunities for a group, the General Jewish Workers’ Alliance, or Bund which had played only a marginal role in both Polish and Jewish politics between 1920 and 1935. The growing strength of the Bund was clearly evident in the municipal elections of late 1938 and early 1939 which saw it emerge as the largest Jewish party in towns such as Warsaw, Łódź, Vilna and Białystok. This article seeks to evaluate the Bund’s reaction to its heightened importance in Jewish politics in Poland.
This article provides an overview of the Bund from the establishment of its precursor organization in 1890 until World War I. First it takes into account the historical conditions that led to the rise of a distinct Jewish socialist movement in the Russian Empire to then focus on its three spheres of activity: (a) economic difficulties, as a Jewish workers’ movement engaged in union-organizing and strikes, (b) political challenges, as a Jewish revolutionary movement working to overthrow the Tsarist system and (c) national obstacles, as a movement fighting for Jewish civil rights and Jewish national autonomy, the advancement of Yiddish language and culture, and the organisation of Jewish self-defense against pogroms. Appended to the article is the translation of an early Bundist pamphlet, The Town Preacher (1895), which presents the movement’s ideas in a simple, popular form, based on the story of the single strike of Jewish tobacco-workers in Vilna.
=e General Jewish Workers Bund of Poland sent memorandum on the position of Jews in occupied Poland in April 1940 to =e Polish Government in France. In sent document Bund mentioned discrimination of Jews in the Second Polish Republic and fact there was plan of support of Jewish emigration to Palestine. It declared active struggle for an independent Poland with the German and Soviet occupiers. It reminded that the Soviet authorities arrested and carried away to the USSR many of the leading activists of the Bund. Advocated concept of socialist and democratic Poland, equality of all citizens and national and cultural rights for ethnic minorities. Bund considered as a utopia Polish and Jewish concepts of building a Jewish state. It demanded Polish government the fight against anti-Semitism in emigration institutions and occupied country, where many Poles took part in German politics of terror against the Jews.
The article describes the activity of the Bund in the years 1897-1939 in Radzyń Podlaski county. The first part of the article presents the most important issues related to the activities of the Bund before 1918, including the strike activity characteristic of this period. The next part of the article describes the specificity of the Bund’s operation in the interwar period, including Bund’s activities in municipal self-government institutions and in Jewish municipalities. It also shows the influence of the Bund on cultural and educational institutions and youth organizations. The last part of the article is the description of Bund's activity during the workers’ ceremonies and demonstrations.

The subject of this article is a case study based on analysis of Sofia Dubnow-Erlich’s autobiography fragments concerning the interwar period. A closer look at the autobiographical texts written by the activist and writer associated with the Bund allows to trace her approach to her own life plans. It also gives a broader look at the Jewish history of activism, and intellectual and political activity in the Second Polish Republic. Reading the memoirs allows us to capture the gender perspective and shows whether and to what extent the gender influenced the actions taken by the author.

W artykule zostały ukazane koleje życia i wędrówki żydowskiego socjalisty z Bundu Leona (Libera) Gotloba. Aktywnie uczestniczył w odbudowie komitetu Bundu i życia społeczności żydowskiej w Tarnowie aż do chwili aresztowania w marcu 1949 r.
Rewolucja 1905 roku i plebejskie doświadczenie polityczne zaprezentował Wiktor Marzec. Is methodology supposed to outshine factography? A new perspective on the 1905 RevolutionThe review article is a polemics with theses presented in the book by Wiktor Marzec Rebelia i reakcja. Rewolucja 1905 roku i plebejskie doświadczenie polityczne [“Rebellion and Reaction. The 1905 Revolution and Plebeian Political Experience”], published in Łódź and Kraków in 2016. Undoubtedly, the book which is a new and interesting voice in the discussion of problems of revolutionary events at the beginning of the 20th century, according to the reviewer, is imbued with Anglo-Saxon methodology, and does not add any new factual contribution to the literature on the subject. Aleksander Łaniewski confronts a book written from the position of discourse-oriented historical sociology from the position of a historian’s workshop. Focusing on random fragments of the 1905 Revolution and ignoring certain socio-political forces is not enough to discuss the plebeian political experience and to give a comprehensive description of Polish political modernity. The analysis, among others, lacked a broader discussion of political subjects from both the “regime” (e.g. Russian monarchist forces) and revolutionary (e.g. anarchist) camps, or the Christian workers’ unions which were on the borderline between two poles of the revolution. Besides, in the analysis of plebeian political experience there was no voice of an extremely important ethnic factor – Jews (Bund, Zionists, Yiddish-language leaflets). In addition, some social groups (peasants, intelligentsia) and women were ignored, as well as some regions important for the 1905 Revolution (e.g. the Białystok Industrial District). It also seems that Wiktor Marzec sometimes falls into an idealization of the proletariat and Polish socialist parties. According to Łaniewski, the fragmentary treatment of the factual material, sources and literature on the subject allow to talk about the need for further research into the Revolution of 1905. The review also underlines that the book is written in a very difficult language. Rebelia i reakcja. Rewolucja 1905 roku i plebejskie doświadczenie polityczne [«Мятеж и реакция.
The presented article is a fragment of more extensive research on the 1905 Revolution in the Grodno Guberniya and concerns the history of the Bund party. The analysis focuses on local aspects of the Bund’s political practice: organizational structures, financing of the party, agitation and propaganda techniques, relations with other political parties, reprisals against Bundists, attempts to influence the non-Jewish proletariat, peasants and the army. There is a short presentation of trade union issues, participation in election campaigns to the Duma, as well as the creation of a new public sphere in the form of workers’ ‘exchanges’ and party ‘clubs.’ Besides, attention is paid to Bundist radicalism, related to the significant majority of young people in the party’s ranks and their revolutionary culture. Grassroots radicalism of local activists manifested itself both in the fight against the police and army (combat organizations), and against anti-Jewish attackers (self-defence), as well as in the use of economic terror in the form of intimidation and expropriation.

Prezentowany artykuł stanowi fragment obszerniejszych badań nad rewolucją 1905 r. w guberni grodzieńskiej i dotyczy dziejów Bundu.
What kind of country are we talking about when we speak of Poland from the perspective of the organized Jewish political leadership in Poland? What should the scope and characteristics of the new Polish state in their view be? What kind of relations should Poland have with neighbouring states, as well as within, among its various populations and societies? The paper explores the changing answers given by different political Jewish leadership in a period of liminality – the interval between two stages and two distinct situations: the imperial order (Austrian and Russian) and the Polish national state. It examines Galicia and the Congress Poland from 1914 to 1918 when the territory was disputed among different empires and nations and its fate was far from clear. The article claims that the different visions of Poland presented by the Jewish leadership were grounded in two assumptions. The first was that the Jews as an integral part of society were legitimately entitled to express their own vision of the future state, the second – that the Jews, as an integral part of society, were entitled to equality on all levels of social life. That is the reason, the article claims, behind the demands for a fair distribution of the state’s resources regardless the mother tongue, religion, or ethno-national identification. The efforts the leaders of the Polish Jewry made to include the Jews as a minority group equal to others in the Polish state took place in the framework of the ethno-national ethos as the constitutive principle of state-building. The changing political circumstances and the growing hegemonic discourse based on the nation and nationality brought, claims the article, to the raising of a new Jewish national leadership during World War I. This leadership became convinced that, in the light of the discriminatory policies and growing anti-Jewish violence, only a mechanism of minority rights could guarantee Jewish existence in Poland.
