The objective of this article is to present the results of a questionnaire survey made with a view to determining whether and to what extent are used the elements of financial analysis in assessing the risk of conducting business. The study also covered the factors differentiating in practice entities’ selections of parameters and comparison planes for the evaluation of own financial situation and that of external entities. It was found that the degree of the use of financial analysis in the assessment of business risks increases along with increases in the size of the entity, range and time of its operation. However, the most important differentiating criterion is the size of the entity. Comparisons made over time are recognised to be the most important out of the criteria applied for comparing financial indicators.
