The paper presents some contemporary Chinese personal names and analyses nine types of them. The nine types are the names: (1) reflecting parents’ hopes; (2) with lexemes denoting natural objects, living space and jewels; (3) describing circumstances of birth; (4) denoting time of birth; (5) denoting seniority and generation; (6) based on toponyms; (7) derived from names of famous persons; (8) based on excerptions; (9) lexically connected with surnames. Each of the names analysed belongs to at least one of the four major categories: (1) commendatory names express parents’ wishes for child’s qualities or its future life; (2) commemorative names commemorate persons, events, circumstances or places; (3) descriptive names denote person’s appearance, character or age; (4) associative names describe a person by association with the person’s place of birth, time of birth or by association with a proverb or a work of fiction. The present deliberations are illustrated with 37 personal names.
The aim of this paper is to examine language data with regard to potential differences between male and female registers. Corpus linguistics is used as a basic methodological approach (mostly quantitative) to the topic and the Hanku corpus, more particularly the sub-corpus Litchi, are used as the primary source of language data. The data are presented in the form of tables together with a brief analysis. The results indicate a considerable variation between male vs. female registers in some areas – lexicon, part-of-speech proportion etc. However in other areas (e.g. prosody) there exists no deviation at all. These indicators of variation will be subject of further, more detailed research.

The influence of English and the usage of Chinese surnames in a number of adaptations of Polish surnames are discussed. The research material consists of 322 Polish surnames. The sources of research material are Chinese websites.
This research paper deals with the realization of time in three languages which belong to different linguistic types: inflected Arabic, agglutinative Turkish and isolated Chinese. The methodological framework of this research is the functional analysis method, the basic notions of which are the conceptual category and typical communicative situation. The paper aims to describe the principles of conveying temporal meaning by linguistic means and consequently the development of an “active” (or communicative) grammar of a certain language which is a grammar for the speaker. In the course of the research an inventory of linguistic means for the realization of time was made, the typology of communicative situations within the conceptual category of time was outlined, differences and similarities in conveying time in the three investigated languages were summarized and prospects for future functional research in Turkish, Arabic and Chinese were defined.
