This study presents a classification of Polish voivodships according to selected data on accidents at work. Statistical inference has been applied to decide on the number of subgroups to be distinguished by means of Ward’s method. Critical values of the proposed test were obtained by two-step procedure, with rough critical values determined by computer simulation. They were then smoothed using the analytical function according to the number of objects (n = 16 Polish provinces) and attributes. In fitting the smoothed critical values, a model with a given loss function was applied. On the basis of this procedure two groups of provinces with different characteristics were designed.

This elaboration is an attempt to discuss the idea of clustering and cluster activities. There has been a rapid increase of the number of clusters in Poland, in recent years. The main role of clusters is development of their members through co-operation and competition, knowledge transfer, internationalization of participants and implementation of innovative solutions. Strengthening the market position is possible by organizing in form of strong entities with an international reach, which is possible, inter alia, through belonging to the cluster. The article also describes the situation of clusters in the agri-food sector, with particular emphasis on the two leading actors of the Wielkopolska region. Food Cluster „LeszczyńskieSmaki” („Leszno Flavors”) and „Food Cluster of SouthernWielkopolska” are good examples of how to develop, build strong brand, thanks to the activities within the cluster.

Selecting the number of clusters to use is one of the biggest problems in cluster analysis. Numerous methods to help one to choose the best number of clusters have been published. Their effectiveness is usually evaluated on the basis of the results of clustering data sets, which contain a known number of groups. This paper presents methods to help determine the best number of clusters. They are presented and used in the analysis of a large data set: 5 cluster validity indexes (Caliński and Harabasz, Hubert and Levine, Dunn, Davies and Bouldin, Rousseeuw) and cross-validation – stability were measured by corrected Rand index. The usefulness of these techniques was then compared and evaluated.

Cluster is a group of spatially concentrated enterprises and institutions linked by a net of interrelations that are very often informal. The aim of the cluster is to use concentrated resources to reach permanent competitive advantage. In a cluster enterprises can reach synergy effect and better results than alone. It is possible thanks to many advantages of clusters such as: less bureaucracy, more investments, more innovations and the possibility to get grants from the EU. In the article the author presents the figures from desk research conducted on enterprises located in the east of Poland. The figures let us look ahead with optimism, because a large number of these enterprises see advantages in creating clusters.

The main goal of the article is to evaluate the importance of regional competitiveness of tourism as a factor of regional growth. The starting point is to examine the operation of cluster tourism organizations in the identified natural clusters of tourism. By calculating the location quotient, we obtain an overview of the concentration of the tourism sector in the Slovak regions. By applying shift-share analysis, we explain the impact of regional competitiveness in tourism on regional growth and profiling of regional specialization in tourism. The existing cluster tourism organizations do not copy the sectoral tourism concentration in the regions. Only three tourist regions where cluster organizations operate are characterized by regional competitiveness in the context of the profiling of tourism specialization. The justification for the questionable action of cluster tourism organizations and their public funding is a challenge for the formulation of a cluster and regional tourism policy.

In the article the stages of clustering were investigated focused on innovative on eco-oriented clusters, substantiated the necessity to use them to reduce the human impact on the environment. Theoretical and methodological aspects of creating and operating a cluster of innovative structures that focused on environmental and economic development were defined. The basic benefits of clustering were described, that was one of the ways of increasing the competitiveness of the region by attracting investments in high-tech infrastructure.

The idea of cooperation and industrial clustering is not new. Enough practical experience shows that the idea of clustering is not always understand correctly what can delivers not correct results and effects. Business chains and industrial clusters do not represent a universal tool for solving economic problems of the regional economics. Therefore, it is necessary to provide adequate and effective practical tools what can identify the industrial sectors in which there is a potential of business clusters and chains birth and existence. The various methods analysing the agglomeration and competitive advantages of the industrial sectors can be usefully used. The aim of this paper is to characterize the selected method – Ellison-Glaeser agglomeration index and its use. This method can help to detect agglomerated sectors, respectively geographic concentration that can be used during the industrial clustering process.
