Parenthood of Deaf mothers of hearing CODA children: Overview of selected research

The aim of this article is to attempt to present the issue of parenthood of Deaf mothers of hearing, underage children (KODA). The presented subject is important from a scientific and cognitive point of view due to the important role of a mother in the family, and also due to the deficit of empirical research and scientific studies in the area of parenthood of Deaf mothers of KODA children. This article consists of five parts. Part one introduces the adopted terminological conventions and also draws attention to the issue of Deaf mothers from mixed-hearing status families as a rarely described or explored area. Part two and three form an attempt at synthetic description of the situation of Deaf mothers, as well as the situation of their hearing children (KODA). The main part of this article focuses on selected empirical studies carried out both in Poland and abroad. The article concludes with the author's summary and conclusions, highlighting that Deaf mothers, in their parental role, encounter a number of barriers regarding, among others, communication, access to information or social perception of parenthood of people with a damaged hearing.

Celem artykułu jest próba przedstawienia problematyki rodzicielstwa Głuchych matek słyszących, nieletnich dzieci (KODA). Podjęcie tego zagadnienia jest ważne z punktu widzenia naukowego oraz poznawczego z uwagi na doniosłą rolę matki, jaką pełni ona w rodzinie, a także przez wzgląd na deficyt badań empirycznych i opracowań naukowych w obszarze rodzicielstwa Głuchych matek dzieci KODA. Tekst składa się z pięciu części. Pierwsza z nich przedstawia przyjęte konwencje terminologiczne, a także zwraca uwagę na problematykę Głuchych matek w rodzinie o mieszanym statusie słyszenia jako obszar tematyczny dotąd rzadko opisywany i eksplorowany. Część druga oraz trzecia stanowią próbę syntetycznego opisu sytuacji matek Głuchych oraz, kolejno, ich słyszących dzieci KODA. Zasadnicza część artykułu obejmuje przegląd wybranych badań empirycznych, przeprowadzonych zarówno w Polsce, jak i zagranicą. Artykuł kończy podsumowanie oraz wnioski autorki, z których wynika, że Głuche matki w pełnieniu roli rodzicielskiej napotykają na szereg barier dotyczących m.in. komunikacji, dostępu do informacji czy też społecznego odbioru rodzicielstwa osób z uszkodzonym analizatorem słuchu.

Human existence is accompanied by attempts at self understanding, finding one’s place in the world and a way to co-exist with other people. The very unique social and family situation of the hearing children of deaf parents allows the trials of clarification of what characterizes and distingishes them as Codas. The childhood, adolescence and adult life of Codas is definitely different than the lives of people living in hearing families. In the family in which one or both parents are deaf it is very likely that the way they are functioning will have consequences for their hearing childrens' future functioning. There are aspects of family life that have influence on this disguised difference, such as: forms of communication, pantomimic gestures, mimics and also the characteristic phenomena of family roles reversal. The relations in Codas untypical families are determined by multiple factors. Among them mutual understanding which, with the help of values presented and applied in the process of upbringing, is one of the most important as it may result, in the right circumstances, in achieving a unique family union. The forming of emotional bonds between deaf parents and their children is influenced by, for example fulfilling the need of love in the family house and the adequate use of situations which favour communication. Usually the perspective of time makes adult Codas more tolerant and fully understanding of the obligations assigned to them by deaf parents during their childhood and adolescence. Being a Coda each time is related to individual life situations in which some Codas may find themselves happy and fulfilled while others won’t.

Ludzka egzystencja jest powiązana z próbami zrozumienia samego siebie, odnalezienia własnego miejsca w świecie i możliwości współistnienia z innymi ludźmi. Specyficzna sytuacja społeczna i rodzinna słyszących dzieci niesłyszących rodziców pozwala podjąć próbę dookreślenia tego, co wyróżnia i charakteryzuje ich jako CODA. Dzieciństwo, dorastanie i życie dorosłe CODA’ków zdecydowanie różni się od codzienności osób wychowanych w słyszących rodzinach. Biorąc pod uwagę rodzinę z rodzicami niesłyszącymi, należy liczyć się z tym, że odmienność funkcjonowania rodziców może mieć konsekwencje w funkcjonowaniu słyszącego dziecka. Wpływ na tę ukrytą inność mają takie aspekty życia w rodzinie, jak: formy komunikowania się, pantomimiczność gestów, mimika oraz m.in. to, iż następuje w ich życiu zamiana ról rodzinnych. Relacje w nietypowej rodzinie CODA zdeterminowane są wieloma czynnikami. Wśród nich niebagatelną rolę odgrywa wzajemne rozumienie się, które dzięki wartościom ukazywanym i urzeczywistnianym w procesie ich wychowania może w sprzyjających okolicznościach prowadzić do swoistej wspólnoty rodzinnej. Na kształtowanie więzi emocjonalnych głuchych rodziców z ich słyszącym dzieckiem wpływa m.in. zaspokojenie potrzeby miłości w domu rodzinnym, wykorzystanie sytuacji, które sprzyjają komunikacji. Zwykle perspektywa czasu sprawia, że CODA, jako dorośli, są bardziej tolerancyjni i w pełni rozumieją wymagania oraz obowiązki stawiane im przez niesłyszących rodziców w dzieciństwie. Bycie CODA jest związane za każdym razem z indywidualną sytuacją życiową, w której niektórzy mogą czuć się szczęśliwi i spełnieni a inni CODA nie.
