(Title in Polish - 'Poznawac - cenic - chronic. Rola dokumentacji dziedzictwa kulturowego w budowaniu poparcia spolecznego dla idei opieki nad zabytkami'). The exhibition entitled 'The founder and his foundation. Documented heritage' was opened to the public on 26 September 2006 at the National Museum in Warsaw. The exposition, composed of 25 plates, was arranged by the Department of Movable Monuments at the National Centre for Monuments Study and Documentation (KOBiDZ), and will be presented in numerous centres across the whole country. Consequently, it will make it possible for the wider public to become acquainted with a fragment of the copious documentation of the Polish cultural legacy collected in KOBiDZ, up to now accessible only to cultural institutions and researchers specialising in this form of heritage. The point of departure for the display, which outlines foundation activity in Poland across the ages, is the founder himself, defined as the founder of an institution endowed with social meaning, the initiator of constructing a public utility object, the provider of material means, and a person who influenced the character of his foundation, frequently the donator of works of art comprising the decoration or element of the outfitting of the erected edifice. The exposition thus presents the activity of assorted groups of founders - rulers, magnates, knights and the nobility, members of the clergy, burghers and peasants, as well as the nation which assumed shape during the era of servitude. The various types of foundations - examples of architecture, the arts and the crafts - include religious initiatives: churches, monasteries and chapels together with their endowment, Ways of the Cross; charity - hospitals, hospices; scientific - schools, libraries; defensive - castles, fortifications; and economic-cultural - towns. The majority of the photographs originates from the collections of KOBiDZ and its regional centres. The commentary consists of the texts of sources, casting a new light on the circumstances of the foundation and characterising the founder, his strivings, predilections and convictions. The objective of the exposition is to disseminate knowledge about the Polish cultural heritage and to involve into the protection of historical monuments also wider environments, including local communities up to now not interested in this task.
