Calendar for the Greek Catholic Slovaks for 1941 was the first publication of its kind intended for the Greek Catholic Slovaks. With its content and involvement of state authorities in the distribution among the faithful, it pointed out the close cooperation of the representatives of the Slovak State regime and the emerging leadership of the Greek Catholic Slovaks in the association with an ideological reference to the legacy of Cyril and Methodius. However, they interpreted it with the emphasis on the requirement to use the Slovak language in religious life and the appropriate share of Slovaks in the leadership of the Greek Catholic Church. The study also analyses the publication in the context of the government’s political goals. The support of the Greek Catholic Slovaks was part of a broader plan the aim of which was to reduce the activities of the unwanted Bishop Pavel Gojdič, the leadership of the Greek Catholic Church and their influence, and ultimately wanted to find the solution to the Ruthenian issue in Slovakia.

The article analyzes the issues of using the linguistic corpus to research Cyril’s and Methodius’s cultural heritage and Church Slavonic texts: the text is considered as the main point for analyzing the history of the Church Slavonic language. The author names topical issues for the research of the Church Slavonic language in the area of Slavia Ortodoxa, and demonstrates the possibilities of using corpus linguistics and its methods in the research of ancient and modern Church Slavonic texts. The article substantiates the theoretical and methodological possibility of analyzing linguistic phenomena (based on the text-centric principle) with the methods of corpus language research. The author analyzes the explanatory possibilities of modern text-oriented corpus linguistics and describes the dynamics of the text-centric approach in modern linguistic developments. The methodological connection of linguistics of Church Slavonic discourse with the corpus method of its research is explained.

Reflecting on the Great-Moravian and Cyril-Methodius traditions in Slovak literature is proved by a number of various comments related to the particular period of time occurring in the works of the earlier provenance. The detailed registration of them is important, however, literary and historical research should also be carried out into writers´ strategies of using such information – the case of Bohuslav Tablic shows that incorporating the information in his reflections on literary history was influenced by certain factors which need to be closely examined.

The appearance of Slavonic literature is related to the history of early medieval Europe. Speaking of the early literature, as well as translations of liturgical texts, we must mention the oldest centers of literature, whose division has been made in terms of the mission of St. Cyril and Methodius. In the so-called Moravian period this were Mikulčicei Sady near Old Mesta, and Pannonia Mosapurk, the seat of the Duke Kocela. After the collapse of the mission of St. Cyril and Methodius, there remained for some time Slavic monasteries in the Czech Republic (the most famous is the Sazava near Prague), and probably in Pannonia, but the main center of Slavic literature moved to the south. There was a Bulgarian school in Preslav and Macedonian school of St. Clement in Ochrid. Translation of biblical texts by Cyril and Methodius is characterized by beautiful language and fidelity to the content, but it is not an accurate translation. Indeed, they explained for clarity, not for the accuracy of the expressions and phrases. St. Cyril and Methodius were faithful to the Greek model, where it was possible. This was based on two sources: firstly a deep knowledge of the Bible, secondly the mastery of the original language and translation of it. Lexical fidelity were rarely broken , and it was never result of chance. Rather, it was due to subordination of the other, considered to be more important, substantive way. The inaccuracy inherited in the past by the Slavonic translation of the inaccuracy was due to causes similar to those that drove the St. Cyril and Methodius: minuteness of the lexical field could cause confusion on the merits, dismissed the biblical text rather than explain it. Accomplishment of precise clarity in the Slavonic text proceeded patchily. St. Cyril and Methodius were guided by different methods, whose implementation was possible due to the excellent linguistic intuition, and realization of the morphological differences occurring between the Greek and Slavic words, and thanks to their ingenuity in creating new words. The work of the first Apostles of the Slavs didn’t disappeared along with their death, founding worthy successors and followers among their students, who, after the fall of the mission in 885, moved the sacred books to new missionary territories, mostly to Bulgaria. In the period between IX–X to the XIV century there arose three great centers of literature, two of Old-Church-Slavonic and a one Middle-Bulgarian, called schools of Ochrid, Preslav and Tyrnovo.

The feast of Ss. Cyril and Methodius belongs to the well-regarded religious and national holidays. The apostles of the Slavs initiated various forms of cultural life, closely connected with that of the church. The legends appearing after the death of Cyril and Methodius testify to a canonized esteem which did not officially exist after the fall of Great Moravia, but found favourable conditions in Bulgaria and the Czech lands. The Cyril-Methodius veneration was restored in Bohemia and Moravia in the 14th century and the first medieval prayers to them were created. The article discusses how the Liturgy of Hours in honour of Ss. Cyril and Methodius has undergone several stages of development until its modern version has been formed.

The aim of the research study is to point out the significance of Cyril and Methodius in the geographical location of the Lithoměřice diocese in the 21st century. Through research, we tried to get an idea of the perception of terms such as the new evangelization, pastoral care, or the importance and priority categorization of Cyril and Methodius among the current residents of the region. The research group consisted of 563 respondents – 37% women (N = 208) and 63% men (N = 355). The age distribution of the research participants was varied and included in several age groups without age restrictions. Regarding the religious structure, 58% (N = 328) of the participants were unaffiliated, 38% (N = 213) claimed to be Christian and 1% (N = 5) Jewish, another religion was defined by 3% (N = 17) of the participants in research. We divided the participants into several groups according to the size of their place of residence. The results of our research point to insufficient knowledge about the significance of Cyril and Methodius and their pastoral and missionary activities.

The study focuses on the reflection of the life and work of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Czech and Slovak media production from the late 1980s to the present. It mainly maps feature films and television production, but it also mentions relevant documentary and cartoon movies that have emerged in the last decade. The final part also deals with the image of “Brothers from Thessaloniki” in the audiovisual works and series presented on the Internet, which usually bring a less conventional or ironic view of these saints and the period of Great Moravia. Interpretative analysis is used as the original method for dealing with individual audiovisual works, giving an emphasis on defining their genre definition, narrative structure and central themes. The analysis of the images of the historical figures of Cyril and Methodius and their contemporaries, depending on the period, the social and political situation and the country in which the audiovisual production was created, is also an important subject of the study. It reflects the social relevance of the analyzed productions and considers its causes.

The saints Cyril’s and Methodius heritage in the minds of the Galician’s became a conglomeration of different phenomena: writing, language, rite, etc. The Cyrillic as the Slavic writing system became a cultural marker in Galicia primarily of Ruthenian/Ukrainian and their faith (in the first time - Orthodoxy, and then - the Greek Catholicism). With regard to the Cyrillic have been three trends: the conservation, the modernization and the rejection of Cyrillic letters in favor of the Latin font. Another attribute of belonging to tradition of St. Cyril and Methodius in Galicia was Church Slavonic. During the of XIX – XX century attitude to it also has changed from sacralization of the Church Slavonic up to his gradual elimination from the liturgical life of the Galician Ruthenian/Ukrainian. Same time the Slavonic rite of the saint Cyril and Methodius in the minds of the Galician became associated primarily with the Eastern rite of local Greek Catholics and the Orthodox. After all, the same figure „Thessaloniki brothers“ became closely linked to the Christianization of Galicia as a „special“ region of Rus’/ Ukraina. At the same time the view of the problems associated with St. Cyril and Methodius tradition among Galician was formed not only empirical, but also by the reading of the text from different regions of the Europe: from Germany and France to the Russia. However, today all the elements of the Cyril and Methodius tradition for the residents of the region, (and for the Ukrainians in general) are a symbol of their unity with the rest of the Slavic world.
