W historiografii polskiej problematyka ta została obszernie zaprezentowana.

This year is celebrated by the church and state the 1050 anniversary of the baptism of Polish. Especially loudly celebrating the anniversary of the Roman Catholic Church. However, the question arises whether the beginning of the Christianization in the Latin rite is the same as at the beginning of the evangelization of Polish lands? Christianity on the Polish territory is in fact a much richer tradition than only one of its current - Latin. The proximity of the Polish lands and the Great Moravia and later with the Chris¬tianised Rus and Bohemia state must have had great impact on the shape of their faith. The Christianisation of the Polish lands commenced during the reign of the Moravi¬an prince Svatopluk. In Polish historiography this issue was broadly presented. The entire literature focusing on this subject matter can be divided into the adherents and opponents of the notion regarding the presence of Methodian mission in Poland. The newest publications, taking into account the archaeological discoveries acknowledge the presence of the Slavonic rite in the Polish lands before and after 966. Owing to the fact that the literature up to date devoted to the Slavonic rite scrupulously raised numerous controversial aspects, in my dissertations I shall not come back to them but rather focus on discussing the history of the Methodian mission in Poland. Knowing¬ly, I shall neglect the presentation of the over a century-old discussion of historians regarding the functioning of the Slavonic rite in Poland. I am aware of the fact that the presented reconstruction of the history of Methodian liturgy is purely hypothetical in numerous instances; however, the lack of sources does not allow for a thorough clar¬ification of the problem matter. It should be noted that the arguments raised against the presence of the Slavonic rite are based on the same source base as the one used by the adherents of the notion that the evangelisation process of Lesser Poland and Silesia was started when Methodius was still alive. Despite numerous doubts as far as the interpretation of sources and historical facts I am convinced that the Slavic lit¬urgy functioned at the Polish lands before the official Christianisation of the country.
In the year 2006 the Polish Catholic Church recalled two historical events of supreme importance for the life of the faithful in post-war Poland liberated from Nazism, but then finding herself under the Communist regime, irremediably determined to introduce there the Marxist vision of society, so destroying the Christian presence. They were the Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary of the Polish Nation (8 September 1946), carried out by the Primate, the Servant of God Card. Augusto Hlond, and the Solemn Vow to the Black Madonna of Jasna Góra (26 August 1956), by the Servant of God Card. Stefano Wyszyński. These two anniversaries provide an opportunity to examine the significance of the vision of the Victory of Mary over the atheistic communist political system, witnessed by Card. Hlond before he died (22 October 1948). To understand it more correctly, we shall examine the kind of Marian devotion Hlond had; the socio-political circumstances of the birth of this vision; its extraordinary influence on the pastoral activity of Card. Wyszyński and the Polish hierarchy. Wyszyński recognised, in fact, the unusual creative force of the vision of Mary the Victorious in planning and implementing an extremely effective pastoral programme for the moral renewal and the evangelisation of Polish society, especially in view of the preparation of the Polish Nation for the Millennium of its Baptism (1966), by means of the Great Novena to the Madonna. This Marian style of pastoral activity – which, despite the criticisms, was all centred on Christ – contributed decisely, even according to the opinion of the non Catholics, to the defence of the freedom of Polish citizens, with a positive reaction outside Poland. In addition reference is made to the perception of this Marian vision in the Petrine ministry of John Paul II, who on not a few occa- sions spoke about this victorious vision of Mary by Card. Hlond. Even though it is not explicitly mentioned , nevertheless the existence can be seen of a thread linking Hlond, Wyszyński and John Paul II: a particular Marian dimension of their pastoral activity.
When Mieszko I went into the water of baptism he opened for the posterity the access not only to the family of the kingdom out of this world, but also to the family of nations of the western culture. His decision started the Polish state. The distance in time and scarce source material cause that the research process is still in progress. The author on the basis of written sources shows how scientific theories considering baptism of Mieszko changed and evolved. Confirmation or falsification of these theories is searched on the basis of archaeological discoveries. On the basis of the research to date the author presents how the main theories considering formation of Polish state based on the decision of baptism of the ruler himself were changing. After presentation of the Mieszko's state in 966, main hypotheses concerning genesis, time and place as well as effects of the baptism of the ruler are pointed out. The theories changed due to the influence of reading sources, political events, comparative research performed through the years and, lately, on the basis of archaeological research and results achieved thanks to the use of the newest research technologies. The baptism of Mieszko was most probably on the territory of Gniezno state in 966 (maybe on Easter Eve). The effects of his decision triggered formation of Christian identity of the Polish state, however, the ruler had probably purposes which were less distant in time, including religious purpose.

This paper is a historical reflection concerning the origins of the statehood of Poland. The author refers to a number of scientific studies and shows the meaning of baptism for the unity of the State of Mieszko I. It can be said that in the history there is no pre-Christian Poland, because it is this religion which became the bond of national identity of Polish people. In his study the author pointed out political sensitivity of the first sovereign of Poland. However, the decision to adopt the Christian religion was probably not motivated by political calculations but was the result of the personal conversion of the prince of the Western Polans. This statement seems to be rooted not only in the written sources but also in the non-verbal national tradition, expressed – for example – in some eminent artistic works. The author emphasizes that Christian Poland from the very beginning was distinguished from its neighbours by three essential elements: catholicity, republicanism and latinism. Those elements ensured that Christian universalism became one of the main characteristics of Poland. In the last part of the study the author focuses on mutual relations between the Church and Polish statehood and on the role which the Catholic faith played in the maintenance of the Polish national identity.
