The text analyses the priestly live of Karol Anton Medvecký in the first period of his pastoral ministry concretely, in the years 1902 – 1909. In this time, the priest of the Banská Bystrica’s diocese was replaced many times to a smaller and inferior parish. It can be generalized that Medvecký’s frequent transfer from parish to parish was a form of punishment. This method was first used by the diocesan vicar Ján Havran, and after the exchange of bishops, it was adopted by the new ordinary of the diocese, Wolfgang Radnai. In this way, they tried to break the persecuted priest and persuade him to give up his national activities and contacts. Subsequently, the position of the priest in the diocese only deteriorated and he spent only a few months or weeks in some parishes. The text evaluates the priest’s relationship with the church hierarchy, but also with his pastors and believers, whose character was also specific.

This study explores the process of changes in pastoral structures in the Pilsener Diocese. It briefly outlines the pastoral situation and the plan for pastoral structure change in the diocese and compares them with the theological concepts of pastoral structure changes in the German-speaking countries. It operates with the Czech concept of the dying Church (Oto Madr). The author comes to the conclusion that 1. The current individual religiosity is not sufficiently accounted for; 2. It looks for the answers for the 'signs of the time'; 3. The changes can succeed if they are based on the understanding of the Church as a collective subject of pastoral activities.

Appointments of the church representatives to the office represented significant processes in the functioning of the church and reflected their status and influence in the society. In the Spiš Chapter, these were the superiors of the church, provosts and canons. In the history of the Spiš Chapter, the practices of appointment underwent significant changes. Besides highest church representatives, papal court and the archbishopric of Esztergom; secular patrons, especially Hungarian sovereigns and members of the Chapter were also involved in the process. Occupation of the canonical posts changed a few times as well. The article deals partially with the practice of acceptance of the office, too. Its aim is to specify the changes which occurred from the foundation of the Chapter at the turn of the 13th century until the foundation of the Spiš Bishopric in 1776. The work is based mostly on the published and unpublished archival sources, especially deeds, canonical visitations and chapter statuses.

Diocesan archbishops and bishops were the most prominent representatives of the medieval Catholic Church in Central Europe. They were responsible for the religious life of their archdiocese or diocese. Only appointed bishop holds power in pontificalibus, in spiritualibus and in temporalibus. After episcopal ordination, they were authorized to perform sacral acts. The status of bishops, in terms of religious governance and property administration, was derived predominantly from the canon law. Universal canon law collections, conciliar decrees and some elements of secular law determine the fundamental rights and obligations of these prelates. The paper presents the most important of them and supplements them with specific cases from the territory of medieval Kingdom of Hungary.
