AThis article contains the results of a new and original study on the interaction between changes in the structural development of Latvia's national economy and the research subjects selected by doctoral students in economics. These changes were studied by using the grouping and classification method, dynamic time line analysis and correlation analysis. The article is topical because there is a lack of scholarly publications on the research interests of new researchers - doctoral students in economics. This article describes a study conducted over a 35-year period. Research subjects are grouped according to four characteristics and categories. This study can be regarded as novelty because it is an original study on the research interests of a new generation of researchers and changes in their interests. It is the first study of the correlation between the changes in the GDP structure and the subjects of doctoral dissertations. New data were obtained on attitudes of doctoral students towards research in primary and secondary production.
