This paper, based on an idea of Michel Foucault from the book Discipline and Punishment, examined how the repressive systems of discipline and punishment are present in selected literary works: on the concrete levels in the novel Our Lady of the Flowers by French author Jean Genet, and on the symbolic levels in the novel Brother by Serbian writer David Albahari, primarily in relation to the moved, queer masculinity, or more precisely the transvestite or transgender persons. At the same time, attention was given to the figure of male friendship, or androcentric figure as the basis of Western philosophy and theory, the figure that excludes heterosexual friendship and friendship among women, as described by Jacques Derrida in his book The Politics of Friendship.

Nawiązując do idei zawartych w dziele Michela Foucaulta Nadzorować i karać, autor na przykładzie dwóch powieści: Matka Boska Kwietna francuskiegoautora Jeana Geneta oraz Brat serbskiego pisarza Davida Albahariego, analizuje sposób manifestowania się represyjnych systemów nadzorowania i karania ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kwestii queer. Ponadto w artykule poruszony został problem figury męskiej przyjaźni lub bratocentryzmu (androcentryzmu), która – zgodnie z rozpoznaniami Jacques’a Derridy zawartymi w książce The Politics of Friendship – jako filar zachodnich systemów filozoficznych wyklucza przyjaźń heteroseksualną lub kobiecą.

This article’s aim is to analyze David Albahari’s Götz and Meyer as the only Serbian literary text whose main theme is the extermination of the native Jews. The recurring key-word of the analysis is the notion of void, which appears both on the plot level and a more metaphorical one that connotes a less perceptible meaning of Albahari’s prose which can be summarized as a conviction about the insufficient memory of the Holocaust in Serbia. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate what method Albahari employs to build his story. Consequently, juxtaposing history (ostensibly objective, linked with the order of reason) with fiction proves to be here of the utmost importance. It demonstrates that this text – indirectly – inscribes itself in the debate on the possibilities of expressing Holocaust.

Body, corpse and death in David Albahari’s Gotz and Meyer The article investigates the broadly understood record of Jewish death that emerges from the text of the Serbian prose writer David Albahari. Emphasizing the dominance of economy in the Nazi system, the author indicates those procedures described in Albahari’s book which justify such an assessment (e.g. human reification, the body as debris, technical syntax used by German officials). Additionally, these considerations on death representation are supplemented with an endeavor to establish the Belgrade dwellers’ attitude towards the fortunes of the Jews. According to the author, the novel explicitly marks the spatial opposition (enclosure vs. opening, the camp vs. the city center) that is reinforced by the river, which during World War II divided the capital into Zemun (belonging to the Independent State of Croatia, also the place where the camp was situated) and Belgrade’s Serbian center. This demarcation intensifies the victims’ feelings of separation and loneliness, at the same time enabling the capital’s dwellers to occupy a comfortable position of bystanders.

Telo, mrtvac, smrt u romanu Gec i Majer Davida Albaharija Rad se bavi vidovima smrti u romanu Gec i Majer Davida Albaharija. Pokazuje mehanizme koje potvrđuju opštepoznatu činjenicu da je u nacističkom sistemu dominirala ekonomija. U te mehanizme se ubrajaju, između ostalih: reifikacija čoveka, tretiranje tela kao otpada i tehnička leksika koju upotrebljavaju nemački funkcioneri. Analiza uključuje i pokušaj odgovora na pitanje kakav je bio odnos stanovnika Beograda prema sudbini Jevreja. Istraživanje pokazuje prostornu opoziciju (zatvoren i otvoren prostor, logor i centar grada). Nju naglašava reka koja je za vreme Drugog svetskog rata delila srpsku prestonicu na Zemun, gde je bio smešten logor, a koji je pripadao NDH, i srpski centar Beograda. Ova granica je vezana za osećaj separacije i usamljenost žrtava, s jedne starne, i udobnost i bajstander-efekat stanovnika prestonice, s druge strane.

This paper is the analysis of Götz and Meyer (Gec i Majer, 1998) by David Albahari (b. 1948), the writer of Serbian and Jewish origin. His novel belongs to the Holocaust-literature and its metanarrative structure calls into question the problem of transferring radical historic moment into fiction. The article focuses on the interrelations between fiction and fact, imagination and history, as well as the traumatic experience recognized as the opportunity to identify with the experience of Holocaust victims. Albahariʼs novel proves that remembering of dramatic events from the past can be activated both by imagination and traumatic experience.
