The aim of the study is an interpretation of Scene VIII of Mickiewicz’s Dresden Forefathers’ Eve (Part Three) [Dziady] in the context of two Don Juan dramas: Tirso de Molina’s The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest [Zwodziciel z Sewilli i Kamienny Gość] and Molière’s Don Juan, or the Stone Guest [Don Juan, czyli Kamienny Gość]. Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, or the Rake Punished [Don Giovanni albo Rozpustnik ukarany], being a synthesis of earlier versions of the Don Juan story, is treated here as the surface layer under which there are a number of relationships between Mickiewicz’s text and works drawing on the Spanish legend. The composition of Scene VIII, the construction of the character (Senator), and humour are the elements that link Mickiewicz’s text with Molière’s drama. What link Forefathers’ Eve with Spanish drama are its moralityplay nature and the message about damnation for unbelief in the existence of Divine reality and justice. Therefore, the scene of the Ball at the Senator’s not only attests to a link between Mickiewicz’s drama and the Molièrean tradition but may also point to an indirect link with Golden Age Spanish drama.

The aim of this article was to analyze the theme of the old Don Juan in two dramas of 1970– 1980 – Don Juan continued by E. Radzinsky and The Death of Don Juan by V. Poutcheglazov to show modifications in the character of Don Juan and to try to draw some conclusions about the condition of Russian drama in 1970–1980.
The aim of this article is to analyze possible literary influence on the drama The Last Day of Don Juan’s Life by the Polish writer S. Zhevusky. We took into consideration the biography of Zhevusky and the detailed analysis of his work and we proposed the thesis about the possible influences of French and Russian literature on the drama The Last Day of Don Juan’s life. As we could observed, the drama by Zhevusky showed some similarity (taking into account the language and the plot) to the following literary works: Don Juan by Moliere, Demon by M. Lermontov, The Stone Guest by A. Pushkin and Don Juan by A. Tolstoy.
The present article is an attempt to use the metaphorical category of temperature in the interpretation of literary creations of love in two different cultural contexts: against the background of the emotional culture of the inter-war period as well as of the present time. The analysis focusses on two literary texts: Don Juan kommt aus dem Krieg (1936) by Ödön von Horváth as well as Don Juan de la Mancha (2007) by Robert Menasse, which encourage to reflect on remarkable transformations of the culture of love and the positioning of both men and women within the new emotional styles.
The contemporary rewritings of Don Juan’s myth highlight several forms of hybridity and illustrate the stakes involved. The hybridation affects in the first place the sources of the myth since the authors appeal to numerous intertextual references. But the successive transpositions of the mythical scenario also lead to a generic hybridity. This intermediality has a reflexive dimension: it raises the question of the limits of language to talk about the myth and abolishes the frontier between fiction and critical speech.
The French thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in their theory of the concept claim that every concept is a point of coincidence, or accumulation of its own components, i.e. the other concepts that it consists of. The concept of Don Juan as ‘the archetypal seducer’ has been circulating in Western culture for several centuries. Independently of epoch and national character, therefore, the figure of Don Juan has been a point of coincidence for three important concepts associated with the character: seduction, transgression, and power/domination. The aim of this article is to consider the development of the Don Juan concept in postmodern society. The article suggests that the established Don Juan concept, based on prohibition, became obsolete at the end of the 20th century, and has been replaced by a new seducer figure – that of the film hero James Bond.

The aim of this article is to analyse the presence of Commander in Mozart’s Don Giovanni as well as show the references to other opera depictions regarding the myth of Don Juan. Commander, also known as the Stone Guest, is an animate tombstone figure, which appears in every classic-based version of the story about Don Juan Tenorio (Don Giovanni) in order to summon a rogue to conversion; when he fails to do so, he drags the rogue to hell. The spectacular character of the final scene turned out to serve as an inspiration for numerous opera makers, from Mozart to Rimsky-Korsakov (Mozart and Salieri). This theme, which has not been the subject of research before, is definitely worth exploring.

The subject of interest in this article is the myth of Don Juan in the life and literary works of two great figures of the Silver Age – Alexander Blok and Valery Bryusov. The consideration of the biographies of writers (Blok’s marriage to Mendeleeva, Bryusov’s romance with Nina Petrovskaya) as well as selected examples from their literary works (Blok’s poems: “Ya ee pobedil nakonets…”, “The Commander’s Footsteps”; Bryusov’s poems: “I snova…”, “Don-Juan”) in the context of the culture of the Silver Age (the philosophy of Vladimir Solovyov, the idea of life-creation, ideas about the “Eternal Feminine”, the myth of the Beautiful Lady, the vampiric myth) led us to the conclusion that the ‘don juanism’ was one of the important components of the myths of poets. We noted that in both cases the concept of ‘don juanism’ is strictly correlated with the concept of vampirism. On the other hand, it is also related to such concepts as “Eternal Femininity”, ‘true to the ideal’, and ‘the role of art’. All these provide us with the basis to state that the productivity and potential of the theme of Don Juan goes far beyond the usual notion of Don Juan as a seducer.

The aim of the present article is to analyse the phenomenon of graphomania on the Internet, with Marina Maslova’s 2004 novel Don Juan as an example. The choice of the text was dictated by the interest in the presence of the eternal image of Don Juan in the Internet space and in the transformations it undergoes there. Taking Maslova’s text as an example, the author of the paper identifies and names essential features of digital literature, among others: derivativeness (non-originality) of literary images, a tense and attractive story, a twisted plot, stereotypical devices, a limited stock of literary images and motifs, the poetics of everyday life, permanent dynamism, polyauthorism, violation of the distance between the author and the text. The analysis of Maslova’s novel makes it possible to identify also the mechanisms of transformations applied to the image of Don Juan in the Internet space. In that connection, it is noted that the discussed writer only takes interest in certain selected situations and motifs from Don Juan’s story, adapts them to the genre of the romance novel, displays a free approach to the literary tradition and deprives the eponymous figure of autonomy in terms of plot.

The article brings a discussion of three poems of Russian modernist poets that undertake the theme of Don Juan – written by Konstantin Balmont, Valery Bryusov and Nikolai Gumilyov. The purpose is to elucidate the characteristics of the artistic dialogue in the discourse of modernist poetry. Two types of dialogue are discussed: macro- and microdialogue. The former is realised through intertextual forms, the latter – by means of intersubjective forms. When poets refer to the image of Don Juan, one variety of dialogue may well transform into the other. The author of the paper indicates emphatically that the poems under discussion constitute a chain of transformations of the image of Don Juan: the image as proposed by Balmont is then developed by Bryusov and revaluated by Gumilyov. The semantic core of all the three texts is the image of Don Juan as a wanderer who yields to temptations of transient delights.

The author of the paper considers the possibility of creating in the Russian theory of literature, by way of analogy to the ‘Petersburg text,’, the ‘Don-Juan text’ of Russian literature. To this purpose, a complex of permanent futures shared by literary works that refer to Don Juan are described. The existence of a ‘Don-Juan text’ is evidenced by a group of literary works that employ the archetype of the famous seducer. Other indicators are: the presence of mythological structure, connection with the spheres of the sacred and the profane, constants in Don Juan’s behaviour, specific vocabulary, classifying the most recurrent words and phrases according to their semantics and function in the text.
The article is a continuation of discussions about the changes that the literary image of Don Juan undergoes at present in online literature. Appealing to literary classics is quite common in the works of Internet authors. Intertextuality seems to be one of the writing strategies on the web. The subject of our interest are the works referring to the literary image of Don Juan published on Russian literary websites, not included in the offline process and overlooked by literary critics. The main task has been to identify the leading tendencies in creating the image of Don Juan, as well as the results to which employing them led. Analyses of a group of texts belonging to online literature allow the author of the paper to comment on the ways in which a literary image born in the Spanish literature of the 17th century continues to exist in the peculiar Internet conditions.

The aim of this article is to analyze the narrative poem Don Juan by Nikolai Otsup – a poet of the first wave of Russian emigration. Otsup’s work is being compared with the poem The Commander’s Footsteps by Aleksandr Blok and the narrative poem Komandorov’s Footsteps by David Samoilov. The author pays attention to the similarities in poetic images, sound and colouristic symbols. Thanks to the contextualization of Otsup’s narrative poem, the author discovers a common tendency in creating the poetic image of the Commander and in the motif of revenge in the Russian poetry of the first half of the 20th century.
