The paper discusses the main features of Poland's two neighboring economies - Russia and Ukraine. It focuses on the presentation of basic macroeconomic indicators in the transformation period of 1990 s and in the first decade of the 21st century. The authors formulated the hypothesis that in an era of increasing globalization and integration of national economies the issue of strengthening ties between Russia and Ukraine and the cooperation of these two countries becomes increasingly pertinent and takes on a whole new meaning. Common interests, as well as mental and cultural proximity should become an underlying motif of key motto for Russia and Ukraine in the process of economic cooperation, which certainly can bring tangible benefits to both societies, and will strengthen the two countries in the international arena. The paper is based on the statistical data of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, the statistical offices of Russia and Ukraine, as well as National Bank of Ukraine.

Czechoslovakia (1918-1993) and its leading politicians played an important role in the 20th century history of Central Europe. The authors analyse the first plan of Milan Hodza, one of the most important Slovak politicians of the first Czechoslovak state (1918 -1939), concerning Central Europe. Milan Hodza, as a prime minister, published his plan named after him in January 1936, and it initiated the economic cooperation of the Danubian states. The authors present the Hungarian and international reactions to the Hodza's plan and its quick failure, mainly on the basis of Hungarian documents. They conclude that the reason for its failure was that it was not in the interest of any country except Czechoslovakia.

The paper analyses the effects and measures the intensity of economic cooperation that Serbia has achieved with the member countries of the Visegrad Group (V4 Group) from 2000 until today. The starting hypothesis is that the common cultural and historical heritage, the geographical proximity of the market and the common experience of the economic transition process can be an incentive for the development of economic cooperation between Serbia and the countries of the V4 Group. A gravity econometric model Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator was used to test the hypothesis. The results of the research confirm a significantly positive impact of the GDP of Serbia and the observed countries, a significantly negative impact of distance and a significantly positive effect of the neighbourhood on bilateral trade flows. Predictors related to the quality of institutions also have a significant positive effect on increasing bilateral trade cooperation between Serbia and the V4 Group.

This paper discusses the issues of cooperation and mutual assistance with regard to the theory of exchange as proposed by Marcel Mauss, Bronislaw Malinowski and Claude Lévi-Strauss. In this approach, exchange is a universal phenomenon of social life. Principles of reciprocity (do, ut des) and balance of services are viewed in the context of everyday life. The analysis presented is based on qualitative ethnographic research carried out in the Silesian Beskid at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The present-day role of the analysed forms of social activity, the rules governing their implementation, and the social consequences of their changes over time are discussed.
