Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, also known as Edith Stein (1891-1942), was a German philosopher of Jewish descent and a Discalced Carmelite. Regarded as a martyr, she was canonized by the Catholic Church. The article is devoted to the interest of Polish researchers and of the Polish press in Edith Stein during the past six decades. Her life and philosophical thought became a subject of analysis soon after her death. Edith Stein had already been mentioned in Catholic press during the Stalin Era in the early 50s. In the 60s the number of articles about her doubled. The most indepth comment and the first translation of Stein's work appeared in 1968 in spite of the anti-Semitic campaign in Poland. In the 70s the number of publications doubled once again. Some of her major works were translated into Polish and the first biography of Edith Stein was written. In the 80s over 100 publications came out, and in the 90s - another 250. Although many of works written by Edith Stein were translated into Polish, there is still much work to be done - in my opinion in the first place An Investigation Concerning the State should be published in Polish.

The paper reflects about the dissertation work by Peter Volek and about the Husserl's Phenomenology and St. Thomas Aquinas' Philosophy by Edith Stein in the light of Luz González Umeres' thinking. It refers to contribution of some Edith Stein's epistemological observations into the theory of knowledge in the structure of real objects of the metaphysical realism as well as to signification of her independent thinking. At the same time it reveals the reasons, why that important nowadays philosopher looks back to the traditional theories with so resolute metaphysical attitude.

The first part of the article presents selected events form the life of Edith Stein, with particular attention paid to her intellectual development including her studies in Breslau and then in Göttingen, her acquaintance and cooperation with an outstanding German philosopher Edmund Hussler, as well as her friendship with Roman Ingarden. The great Polish philosopher’s comments on Edith Stein’s philosophy have been presented in the second part of the article. They definitely provide excellent elaboration on her scientific output. The third part of the text focuses on “empathy” or “Einfühlung” as a way to get to know another human being. Edith Stein’s whole doctoral dissertation focuses on that particular issue, as it was written in the period of the Author’s phenomenological activity.

The paper aims to make the case that Edith Stein’s thought on feminine distinctiveness and sexual difference between man and woman deserves interest not only from historical point of view but also as a potential contribution to the present-day debates in feminist theory. In the first part, we argue for the relevance of classical phenomenology to current feminist theory. Phenomenologists avoid reducing the question of sexual difference to its empirical level. They rather reveal the sense of the difference by tracing its genesis within the experience of a concrete person and conceive it as a difference regarding the form or style of the entire intentional life. The aim of the second part is to show that Edith Stein phenomenological account of sexual difference is just of this sort. Therefore, her philosophy provides a basis of a fruitful phenomenological alternative to naturalistic and constructivist approaches in current feminist theory.

The present article examines Edith Stein’s sexual differential anthropology as contained in her conferences for meetings of Catholic women circles. The author analyses her exegetic, philosophical and theological approach to the woman question. Stein had anticipated the categories of identity and reciprocity used in contemporary discussions. She finds a solution to the problems of identity and relationship between men and women in the biblical message concerning the first human couple, in the mystery of the incarnation and in the Trinitarian relationships.

The article is an inquiry on how the figure of Edith Stein functions in the collective memory of Poles, Germans and Jews within the several decades since her death. The topic is tackled from the perspective of culture studies and philosophy. An analysis of official manifestations of memory, especially in Germany and in the Catholic Church, is an introduction to an in-depth analysis of the modes of presence of this figure in culture (literature, film) as well as the role of regional and religious communities, societies and different milieus in Poland and Germany in creating the memory of Edith Stein. The text shows how the same values for which Edith Stein is remembered in one community of memory might and indeed do result in oblivion in other communities, while in still different ones serve to build national or regional identity.
