The paper situates Wayne C. Booth's theory of ethical criticism in the context of aesthetic autonomists / aesthetic moralists debate. Booth claims that the gap between the academic practice of concentrating on formal aspects of literary artworks and our everyday, common relations with books can be filled by ethical criticism of literature. He proposes a special procedure - coduction. Booth's point of view, focused on the advantages of ethics for literature is in the paper completed by the theory of Martha Nussbaum, who approaches the subject from the reverse perspective, focusing on the advantages of including literary works into the ethical considerations.
