This investigation of the modern crisis of ethics has been inspired by the phenomenology of Adam Węgrzecki. His texts analyzing the relationship between the personal subject and values opened a unique space within contemporary ethics, presenting a vast array of complex problems. From among these I chose the two I believe to be most important for ethics. The first (first part of the article) is his reflections upon the source of ethics, which is given in experience. Here an attempt has been made to outline the anthropological minimum necessary as the basis of ethics. The second (second part of the article) is Węgrzecki’s theory of the personal subject and of his formation in contact with values, in his individual activity. The subject's ability to "read" values has an essential influence on his life and ethical formation.
