Przedmiotem opracowania jest zagadnienie kurczenia się miast, a jego celem identyfikacja towarzyszących temu zjawisk ludnościowych. Identyfikacji tej dokonano na przykładzie jednego z miast polskich, jakim jest Łódź. Wybór tego właśnie miasta miał charakter celowy, albowiem tam właśnie proces kurczenia się ma tak duże nasilenie, iż zagraża dalszemu jego istnieniu. W opracowaniu przedstawiono znaczenie zmian bazy gospodarczej dla analizowanego procesu oraz dokonano analizy wybranych aspektów sytuacji demograficznej i gospodarczej Łodzi na tle innych wielkich miast polskich. W zakończeniu wskazano na potrzebę tworzenia nowej bazy gospodarczej miast.

The main issue in the paper is the shrinking of the city and the purpose of the analysis was to identify the population phenomena that accompany the process. The identification was based on an example of one of Polish cities – Lodz. The choice of this particular city was not accidental. The shrinking process there is of such an intensity that it becomes a threat to its existence in the future. The paper presents the importance of changes to the economic basis for the analysed process. Additionally an analysis of selected aspects of demographical and economic situation of Lodz was performed in comparison to other Polish cities. Conclusions point at the need for the creation of a new economic basis for the city.
